Indiana Sweeps San Diego

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 6 Indiana women's water polo team swept San Diego on day two of the Daktronics Gaucho Invitational, picking up victories over No. 15 UC-San Diego and No. 10 San Diego State. The Hoosiers opened the morning with a 7-4 win over UCSD, before dumping the Aztecs, 7-6, later in the day. The Hoosiers improve to 7-4 on the year and will play in the ninth-place game on Sunday.
"I was proud of the way the ladies played against San Diego State," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "I had a feeling it would be a back and forth type of game, but I was pleased that we were able to respond once we got into a hole. This team has a lot of character, and continues to show it with their hard work."
Indiana fell behind early against San Diego State. The Aztecs notched a pair of goals in the opening two minutes, including one with the 6-on-5 advantage. The Hoosiers would claw back with a pair of their own before the end of the first.
Senior Krista Peterson scored on a shot from the post off the assist from fellow classmate Kandace Waldthaler to open the Hoosier scoring. Freshman Linda Calvert notched her first career tally for the Cream and Crimson to even the game with 1:22 remaining in the first period. Peterson fed the ball to Calvert in the post, who spun and lobbed a shot over the SDSU goalkeeper.
"I was really happy to see Linda score for us," King said. "She has played well for us this season, but has been a little unlucky offensively. She really showed her strengths and was one of the keys to our win against SDSU."
The Aztecs would build their advantage back to two with a pair of four-meter penalty goals in the second period. The first came with 5:59 showing on the clock, while the final four-meter came with one second remaining in the half. The final four-meter penalty goal came with a bit of controversy as well. With under 15 seconds remaining, Peterson attempted a shot for the Hoosiers that deflected off the crossbar. Once the ball was corralled by the SDSU goalkeeper, the clock was stopped for three seconds. The stoppage allowed SDSU to get the ball up the pool, and draw the four-meter penalty with just one second showing.
The Hoosiers would not be denied though, as they fought back to even in the third period. Calvert tallied her second goal of the game on a similar play to cut the deficit to one with 3:45 remaining in the period. On the next Hoosier possession, Waldthaler drew a four-meter penalty on the counter, and converted the penalty shot just past the SDSU goalkeeper.
Waldthaler struck again less than a minute into the final period. The Fairfield, Calif., native fed Peterson in the post. The double-team came to Peterson, who pushed the ball back out to Waldthaler. The senior attacker/center lofted a shot into the left corner, giving the Hoosiers their first advantage of the game at 5-4.
"Kandace had an excellent game for us," King said. "She is one of our leaders on the offensive end, and she showed that against San Diego State. She came up with some big shots down the stretch."
SDSU evened the match with a 6-on-5 goal on the next position with 5:33 remaining. Waldthaler put the Hoosiers back on top two minutes later with a hook from the post into the right side of the net. Junior Emily Schmitt garnered the assist on the goal, feeding Waldthaler in the post.
The Aztecs would once again get even with the 6-on-5 advantage. SDSU scored with just 1:15 remaining on a perimeter shot, tying the game at six.
IU answered the call for the final time on the following possession. After Waldthaler drew the ejection in the post to give IU the 6-on-5 advantage, Schmitt buried a shot from the perimeter into the upper right corner giving the Hoosiers the final advantage.
After the Hoosier defense held, IU was able to run the clock out thanks to Waldthaler. Goldner fed the ball to Waldthaler in the middle of the pool. She swam out most of the remaining 30 seconds, before drawing the final ejection of the night to ice the game. It was one of her five drawn kickouts on the evening.
Waldthaler finished with her ninth career hat trick, and the Hoosiers improved to 8-1 in those games. She also added an assist and a team-leading three steals as well. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner finished the game with seven saves and one steal. Sophomore Kristin Zernicke and Peterson finished with a pair of assists in the victory as well.
The win over San Diego State was IU's fourth win over a top 10 opponent this season. It also marked the first time in the program's history that the Cream and Crimson had knocked off the Aztecs. The Hoosiers were 0-3 entering the game against SDSU.
The Cream and Crimson defeated No. 15 UC-San Diego in the morning without the services of head coach Barry King. King was issued the first red card of his career in the Hoosiers' 7-6 loss to No. 12 San Jose State the pervious night. As a result, assistant coach Cara Schindler took the helm and led IU to a 7-4 victory over the Tritons.
Against UCSD The Hoosiers stormed out of the gates scoring a pair of goals in the opening two minutes of the game. The Tritons would draw within one at 2-1 and 3-2 before the end of the half.
The Hoosiers put the game away for the most part in the third period with a pair of tallies, while shutting out their Southern California opponent. Each team tacked on a pair of markers in the fourth period for the final margin.
The Cream and Crimson picked up the victory despite being grossly out ejected 13-4. UC-San Diego could not do much with the 6-on-5 advantage, scoring only once on their 12 opportunities. By contrast, the Hoosiers were a mere 1-of-3 with the advantage.
