Hoosiers Fall to No. 7 Cal

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 6 Indiana women's water polo team dropped the ninth-place game of the Daktronics Gaucho Invitational on Sunday, falling 5-3 to No. 7 California. The Hoosiers finished the Invite in 10th place with a 3-2 mark. The tournament included 18 of the top 20 teams in the country and every team in the top 10. IU is now 7-5 on the season.
"I felt like we had a good tournament," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "Obviously it was not the results we wanted, but the ladies played hard and competed. We knew Cal would come in a little angry after we beat them at Stanford. I thought the women matched their intensity from the start, but we were not aggressive enough on the offensive end. We moved backward, and did not attack the goal enough."
In a defensive first quarter, it appeared the Golden Bears would strike first. With 4:31 remaining in the period, Cal had a breakaway, but senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner was up to the challenge denying the opportunity. It would be the Hoosiers who struck first with just 1:07 remaining in the opening period. After freshman Carolyn Conway drew the ejection in the post to give Indiana the 6-on-5 advantage, senior Krista Peterson scored into the right side of the net from the perimeter. The goal staked the Hoosiers to an early 1-0 advantage.
The Golden Bears would respond scoring three tallies over the next minute and a half of the game, including a pair before the end of the first period. The possession following the Hoosiers' goal, Cal went to the post to even the match with 52 seconds remaining in the first. The Golden Bears would take the lead for good with a skip shot on the counter with just 15 seconds left in the opening period.
Cal pushed the lead to 3-1 just 39 seconds into the second period. The Golden Bears used the 6-on-5 advantage to increase its lead.
The Hoosiers, like they had most of the tournament, battled back, cutting the deficit to one with 2:01 remaining in the second. Senior Kandace Waldthaler drew an ejection in the post and then scored on a tip in off the assist from junior Janis Pardy.
The Golden Bears would score on their next possession to push the lead back to two before the half. Like IU, Cal used a tip in with the 6-on-5 advantage to score its marker with 1:32 remaining in the opening half.
The second half proved similar to the first with defense being showcased. Indiana cut the Cal lead back to one at 4-3 with just 1:46 remaining in the third. Peterson scored on a shot from the perimeter off the assist from sophomore Kristin Zernicke. Peterson shot hit the crossbar, bounded down off the Cal goalkeeper's head and back across the goal line.
The Hoosiers would get no closer as Cal once against pushed its advantage back to two with 3:18 remaining in the game. The Golden Bears scored on a shot from the perimeter into the upper corner of the net.
Indiana would continue to battle, but were unfortunate on its attempts. Peterson had a shot from five-meters with 2:18 remaining and the Hoosiers on the 6-on-5 advantage. The opportunity would not come to fruition as a Cal defender deflected the shot wide of the goal. Junior Emily Schmitt also had a solid scoring chance for the Hoosiers with under two minutes remaining, but her perimeter shot deflected off the crossbar.
Goldner finished with 11 saves in net for IU. It marked the 32nd time in her Hoosier career that she had double-digit saves. It was also the second time against Cal this season as the Los Altos Hills, Calif., native had 16 in a victory over the Golden Bears earlier in February. Junior Clare Meadows and Conway led the Hoosiers on the defensive end with a pair of steals each.
The Cream and Crimson will return to action next weekend with six CWPA Western Division affairs. IU will travel to Grove City, Pa., to take on Grove City at 7 p.m. and Washington & Jefferson at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 5. The Hoosiers will also travel to battle Slippery Rock on Saturday at 1 p.m. On Sunday, March 6, the Hoosiers will battle Penn State-Behrend at 9:30 a.m., Mercyhurst at 12:30 p.m. and Gannon at 3:30 p.m. All three games on Sunday will be played in Erie, Pa.
