IU Drops Hard Fought Game to Hawkeyes, 56-53

The Omaha, Neb., native, had career-highs of 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 11 rebounds, while playing a season-high 28 minutes. Gathing added 13 points, while sophomore guard Annika Boyd chipped in with 10 points.
In the first half, Indiana (10-17, 3-13 Big Ten) got on the scoreboard first as junior guard Cyndi Valentin hit a three-pointer at the 19:37 mark. Iowa responded with jumper by senior guard Jenna Armstrong at the 19:17 mark.
Boyd then nailed Indiana's second three-pointer in as many attempts at the 18:58 mark to give Indiana a 6-2 lead.
Iowa responded with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 12-6 lead, before sophomore guard Leah Enterline's lay up brought IU back within four at 12-8.
Iowa extended its lead to 18-12 on a lay in by senior center Jaime Cavey at the 9:41 mark in the first half.
Indiana cut the lead to two, 20-18, on back-to-back lay ups by sophomore center Sarah McKay with 5:59 remaining in the first half.
At the 5:42 mark in the first period, Valentin suffered an elbow to the eye that forced her to miss the remainder of the first half.
A basket from Boyd then gave IU its first lead of the game since the 18:05 mark. On the next trip down the court, Cavey put it through the hoop to tie the game at 24. With four seconds remaining in the half, Armstrong gave Iowa the lead, 27-24, after she nailed a three-pointer off an assist from junior guard Crystal Smith.
Indiana took its first lead of second half at 28-27 on a jumper by Gathing off an assist from Stephenson with 18:33 remaining. Iowa responded with a lay in by Cavey to regain the lead at 29-28.
Boyd regained the IU lead at 31-29 after she nailed a three-pointer at the 16:53 mark.
Junior guard Kali Kullberg gave IU a five-point lead, 34-29, on a three-pointer at the 14:20 mark to give IU a 34-29 advantage.
However, Iowa responded with a another 10-0 run to take a 39-34 lead before Chapman broke a six-minute scoring drought with a jumper at the 8:23 mark to bring IU within three at 39-36.
Indiana went on a 6-2 run to grab the lead at 42-41 that ended with a Kullberg steal and lay in before Smith gave the Hawkeyes the lead for good on a three-pointer with 5:43 remaining in the second half.
Iowa extended its lead to 50-42 on a Smith drive to the basket with 2:20 remaining in the game.
The Hoosiers never gave up and battled to within one, 52-51 on Gathing's first career three-pointer with 17 seconds remaining. However, the Hawkeyes hit all four of their free throws from that point on to seal the win.
The Hoosiers are off until March 3, when they travel to Indianapolis, Ind. for the Big Ten Tournament. The No. 9 seeded Hoosiers will take on No. 8 seed Wisconsin at 3 p.m. in the first round of the tournament.
