Waldthaler Named POW

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana senior Kandace Waldthaler was named the Western Division Player of the Week by the Collegiate Water Polo Association for her performance at the Michigan Invitational. The Fairfield, Calif., native led the No. 10 Hoosiers to a 2-1 record with a team-leading five goals.
"Kandace had a great game against Michigan," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We look to her as one of our top scoring threats, and she came through. It was one of the best games I have seen her play here at Indiana."
The honor is the second of Waldthaler's career. She was named the player of the week following her performance at the Aloha Classic on March 25, 2004. Waldthaler scored 13 goals in six games at the Classic, including three hat tricks.
At the season-opening Michigan Invitational, Waldthaler scored five goals on nine shots with an assist. She recorded the eighth hat trick of her career in leading the Hoosiers past rival and then-No. 9 Michigan, 7-6, on Saturday, Jan. 29. The 2004 All-CWPA selection scored the first two goals of the match, pushing IU to the early advantage. She also scored to give IU a 5-4 advantage in the fourth period.
Waldthaler also had four kickouts earned against the Wolverines. She also registered a goal in games against No. 1 UCLA and Colorado State. In a 13-3 victory over the Rams, she had a goal, an assist and earned a four-meter penalty shot for the Hoosiers, drawing the ejection.
Including Waldthaler, three Hoosiers earned player of the week accolades a season ago. Sophomore Kara Woolley earned the honor on April 1, 2004 following her performance in five Division match ups. Senior Krista Peterson was honored on April 16, 2004 after she recorded a hat trick in an exhibition against the U.S. National team.
Indiana will travel to the Stanford Invitational on Feb. 12-13. The Hoosiers will be in one of two round robin brackets with the first, second, third and fourth-place finishers in each bracket going on to face one another. IU will be paired with No. 2 USC, No. 6 California and No. 7 Hawaii. Indiana will face the Golden Bears on Feb. 12 at 12:00 p.m. (PT) and Hawaii at 7:00 p.m. (PT). The Hoosiers will return the following day to battle the defending national champion Trojans at 9:30 a.m. (PT) before facing a team placing the same in the opposite bracket. The other round robin bracket at the Stanford Invite includes No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Stanford, No. 11 San Jose State and No. 13 UC-Davis.
