IU Drops a Pair in Arizona

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 9 Indiana women's water polo team dropped a pair of matches to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents on Saturday at Arizona State. The Hoosiers fell 15-6 to No. 3 Long Beach State and 6-2 to No. 13 UC-Irvine. The losses snap a six-match winning streak for the Hoosiers as they fall to 13-7 on the season.
"We just did not play well today," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "Hopefully we can get things ironed out before our match against Arizona State."
Against the 49ers, the Hoosiers fell behind 5-1 after the first period of play and trailed 7-1 at the half. Long Beach State improved to 3-1 all-time against the Hoosiers with the victory. Sophomore Kara Woolley led the Hoosiers with a pair of goals, her 11th and 12th on the year. Senior Krista Peterson, freshman Linda Calvert, sophomore Claire Nicholson and freshman Carolyn Conway rounded out the Hoosier scorers against the 49ers. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner had five saves on the defensive end versus Long Beach State.
The Hoosiers once again fell behind early against the UC-Irvine Anteaters. The Cream and Crimson trailed 2-0 after the first period and 4-1 at the half. IU was unable to over the deficit as the Anteaters led 5-1 after the third and 6-2 with the final horn. UC-Irvine used the 6-on-5 advantage to pick up the win. The Anteaters scored four of their six goals with the man advantage. The Hoosiers on the other hand were unable to score on 11 opportunities with the man advantage.

Peterson notched her team-leading 34th goal on the season and the 205th of her Hoosier career. The Portland, Ore., native is one of only two players, along with former All-American Kristin Stanford, in Hoosier history to record 200 goals in a career. Junior Janis Pardy scored IU's other goal against UC-Irvine, her 12th on the season. Goldner finished with four saves against the Anteaters.
The Hoosiers will return to action on Sunday, March 13. The Cream and Crimson will square off with host and No. 19 Arizona State at 6:00 p.m. MT. The Hoosiers are 2-0 all-time against the Sun Devils, including a 6-5 overtime win at the Michigan Invitational last season.
