Waldthaler Burns Sun Devils

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 9 Indiana women's water polo team capped off its trip to Arizona with a 6-5 victory over No. 19 Arizona State on Sunday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The win snap a two-match losing streak for the Hoosiers as they improved to 14-7 on the season.
Senior attacker/center Kandace Waldthaler led the way for the Cream and Crimson with her fourth hat trick of the season and 11th over of her Hoosier career. The Fairfield, Calif., native tallied four makers in the victory. Freshman Carolyn Conway and junior Janis Pardy added goals as well for IU.
Arizona State got on the board first with 2:52 remaining in the opening period on a goal by Ashley Bower. IU responded on its next possession with a 6-on-5 goal from Waldthaler with 2:26 remaining in the first to draw even at one.
Conway gave the Hoosiers the lead for good just 31 seconds into the second period of play. The goal was her 29th of the season.
Waldthaler scored the next two Hoosier goals to extend the lead to 4-1. After a four-meter penalty on Arizona State, Waldthaler converted her second penalty shot of the season and 11th of her career with 5:31 remaining in the opening half. Just over three minutes later, she struck again to extend the advantage to three. The Sun Devils scored on the man advantage with just 11 seconds remaining in the second period to close to 4-2 at the half.
Arizona State drew within one just under two minutes into the second half. Bowers scored the second of her three goals on the night, narrowing the gap to 4-3. Pardy responded on the next possession for the Hoosiers to push the lead back to two at 5-3. It was her 13th goal of the season.
The two teams continued to trade goals as Katie Hedley scored with 1:41 remaining in the third, drawing the Sun Devils back within one. Like it had earlier in the period, IU scored on the ensuing possession to push the advantage back to two goals. One second after an ejection on Arizona State, Waldthaler scored her fourth goal of the evening with 1:29 remaining. The goal pushed the advantage back to two at 6-4. The four-goal total for Waldthaler equaled a career-high, the fourth time in her career she had scored four times in a match.
The Hoosier defense would hold the Sun Devils at bay for the rest of the match. IU fought off a pair of man disadvantages over the final 3:30 of play. ASU would add a goal with 1:50 remaining to close the gap to the final margin of 6-5.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner finished with 11 saves, including three in the final period of play. It marked the seventh time this season and 33rd in her Hoosier career that Goldner had registered double-digit saves in a match.
Indiana improved to 3-0 all-time against Arizona State. The Cream and Crimson defeated the Sun Devils by an identical 6-5 score at the 2004 Michigan Invitational in overtime. Indiana also defeated ASU in Tempe during the 2003 season.
The Hoosiers will return to action next weekend when they travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. The Cream and Crimson will battle No. 12 Michigan at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 18 for the Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division regular season title. The winner will receive the top seed at the CWPA Western Division Championship, April 22-23 in Grove City, Pa. IU will also take part in the Wolverine Invitational on March 19 and 20. The Hoosiers will battle Cal Lutheran at 11:30 a.m. and Brown at 6:20 p.m. on Saturday, March 19. On Sunday, IU will face No. 7 Loyola Marymount at 9 a.m.
