UNLV Invite: Day One (3/14/05)
3/14/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The IU women's golf team played the opening round of the UNLV Spring Invitational here Monday. The Hoosiers carded a 343 on the par 72, 6,009-yard Black Mountain Golf Course, and will enter Tuesday's second round in 16th place.
"The course played really difficult today because of the weather," head coach Clint Wallman said. "The winds were really gusting and made some holes play long. It is suppose to be a little nicer tomorrow and hopefully we will be able to climb up the leader board."
Southern California leads the 18-team field, shooting an 18-over par 306. The Trojans lead Arizona (312) and tournament-host UNLV (312) by six strokes. Big Ten rival Michigan (316) is fourth, while Pepperdine (317) rounds out the top five.
The Hoosiers were led by freshman Elaine Harris, whose two birdies on the afternoon both came on par-5 holes. However, Harris double-bogeyed and triple-bogeyed the other par 5's, and carded a 10-over par 82 to sit in a tie for 38th entering the second round. Senior Bethany Brunner finished just behind Harris with an 84 and is presently tied for 59th. Brunner was the team's leader in birdies on the afternoon with three - one each on a par three, par four and par five.
Senior Katie Carlson sits in a tie for 83rd with an 88, followed by junior Molly Redfearn who shot an 89. Freshman Stephanie Mayotte rounds out IU with a 92 on the day.
Tuesday's second round is set to tee off at 8:30 a.m. PT. CLICK HERE for Golfstat live scoring.
