LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The IU women's golf team improved dramatically on the second day of the UNLV Spring Invitational, and enters Wednesday's third and final round in 15th place overall with a 661. After opening tournament play on Monday with a 343, the Hoosiers cut 25 strokes off their score, the biggest improvement in the field, and recorded a 318 heading into the tournament's third, and final round.
"We played well today," Indiana women's golf coach Clint Wallman said. "To be able to shave 25 strokes off of our overall score is a great accomplishment. We hit some big shots and hopefully the momentum and confidence we displayed today will carry over into (Wednesday's) final round."
In all, every IU golfer cut at least two strokes from their opening round score. After recording an 84 on Monday, senior Bethany Brunner led the charge for the Hoosiers on Tuesday, shooting a 78 on the par 72, 6,009-yard Black Mountain Golf Course. The mark was the lowest round of the day for any IU golfer. As a result, Brunner, along with freshman Elaine Harris, are both tied for 44th with a 166. Harris led IU in the opening 18 holes with an 82, and cut two strokes off that score with an 80 on Tuesday afternoon.
"I thought Bethany played a very solid round," Wallman said. "She made a couple of adjustments from Monday and that really helped. She played with poise and confidence and that is exactly what you want out of your seniors."
Senior Katie Carlson was the most improved IU golfer, shooting an 80 on the day after an 88 in the opening round. Carlson will be in a tie for 71st heading into the final 18 holes. Freshman Stephanie Mayotte recorded a career-low round of 80, to move up 10 spots in a tie for 84th with a 172 (92-80). Junior Molly Redfearn rounds out IU, coming in a tie for 88th with a 173 (89-84).
Southern California continues to lead the 18-team field, shooting a 25-over par 601 (306-295). The Trojans, one of only two teams to break 300 on the day, lead second-place Arizona (312-298/610) by five strokes. Pepperdine sits in third overall with a 619 (317-302). Tournament-host UNLV dropped from second to fourth on the day with a 621 (312-309), while Big Ten rival Michigan (316-308) and Tennessee (318-306) rounds out the top five with a 624.
