BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana second baseman Jay Brant has been named the Big Ten co-Player of the Week for the period ending March 14, the league office announced on Tuesday. The honor is the first of Brant's career.
"It's a big honor," said Brant. "I have been fortunate to get into a rhythm at the plate. I feel real comfortable, and I have been able to dictate what pitches I'm swinging at and control my at-bats."
During the week, Brant batted .800 in four games, recording 12 hits in 15 at-bats while scoring nine runs. The Hoosiers won three of four games during the stretch.
The junior second baseman also drove in five runs and stole three bases while posting a slugging percentage of 1.133. He was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate against Bucknell (March 13) and ended the week with a 4-for-5 effort against Yale (March 14).
On the season, Brant leads the team with a .466 batting average, 27 hits, 23 runs, seven stolen bases and a .537 on-base percentage.
Brant shared the award with Andy Cox of Iowa, while Jim Brauer of Michigan earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
The 10-3 Hoosiers return to the field for their fifth game in Florida against Columbia at 10:30 a.m. EST on Thursday, March 17. IU is 4-0 on the seven-game trip.
