Hoosiers Finish Third, Quirarte Fourth at Pioneer

GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Three Hoosiers shot even par or lower as the Indiana men's golf team finished third at the 15-team Pioneer Classic. IU carded a two-under-par 286 in the final round for a 54-hole 859 total (293-280-286), finishing one shot behind second-place Northern Colorado (286-288-284). Wichita State captured the championship with 821 (281-268-272) at the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Club.
Leading the Cream and Crimson, freshman Santiago Quirarte netted his best finish as a collegian, ending the Classic in fourth place. After shooting a 6-under-par 138 total with an opening-round 71 and a 67 in round two, Quirarte closed with an even-par 72 for a 210 mark. The Queretaro, Mexico, product shot season-best 18-, 36- and 54-hole scores.
"This was a promising tournament for Santiago," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "In my 16 years at IU, this is one of the better tournaments a freshman has played. He was a little tentative early, but Santiago really played solid golf."
Wichita State standout Judd Easterling earned medalist honors with rounds of 66, 65 and 64 for a 21-under-par finish.
All-American Jeff Overton fired a 3-under 69, the lowest round by a Hoosier. With the round, Overton moved into a tie for 15th, concluding the Classic at 214 (74-71-69).
Junior Brad Marek closed strong with a final-round 73 after matching his career-low round with a 69 on the second 18. The Arlington Heights, Ill., native tied for 26th place with a three-round 217 (75-69-73). His total equaled the lowest 54-hole score of his career, which he set at the 2002 Northern Intercollegiate.
Participating in his first tournament as a Hoosier, walk-on Aaron Harrell joined Quirarte and Overton at level par or lower, as he claimed an even-par 72. The junior placed in a tie for 40th, shooting 220 (73-75-72).
"This was a good tournament for Aaron. To play this well in his first collegiate tournament, you have to give him a lot of credit," said Mayer.
Rounding out the line up, senior Heath Peters sat at 4-under-par through 10 holes before closing with a 73. The Garrett, Ind., product ended the event tied for 43rd at 221 (73-75-73).
"We really gutted it out today. We did not play as well as we have been," said Mayer. "Jeff and Heath are our go-to guys. They have to play better than they did if we are going to win."

Up next, Indiana returns to the links on Monday-Tuesday, March 28-29, at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C. The Intercollegiate will be held on Pinehurst No. 8.
