McCary Wins Golden Helmet

TAMPA, Fla. - 2005 Indiana football signee Demetrius McCray was honored with the Coca-Cola Golden Helmet Award, the equivalent of the Class 4A Player of the Year award for the state of Florida, on Tuesday afternoon at the Tampa Airport Hilton.

The running back from Armwood High School was also named the Tampa Tribune's Player of the Year.

McCray was listed as the 37th-best running back in the nation by Rivals.com and was ranked as the 46th-best player in Florida by the Tribune. He rushed for 1,642 yards and 29 touchdowns on 142 carries en route to Hillsborough County Player of the Year and first team all-state honors his senior year

The Hoosiers will open spring practice on Tuesday, March 22. McCray will join the football team for summer camp in August.

"Some coaches in Florida told us they thought he was the best running back in the state," Indiana head football coach Terry Hoeppner said. "We heard one quote, never been caught from behind."
