Indiana Heads to Michigan

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 9 Indiana women's water polo team will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a quartet of matches, March 18-20. Indiana will take on No. 11 Michigan in a Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division match on Friday. The Cream and Crimson will then take part in the Wolverine Invite with three matches on Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20. All four Hoosier matches will be played in Canham Natatorium, which is the site of the NCAA Championship, May 13-15.
The Hoosiers will square off with No. 11 Michigan on Friday night at 7 p.m. for the CWPA Western Division regular season title. The winner will also garner the No. 1 seed at the CWPA Western Division Championship in Grove City, Pa., April 22-23. Indiana will be in search of its first CWPA Division title.
The Hoosiers will also take part in the Wolverine Invitational on Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20. Indiana will battle Cal Lutheran on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. followed by a 6:20 p.m. match with Brown. Indiana will cap the weekend with a 9 a.m. match against No. 7 Loyola Marymount on Sunday.

Scouting No. 11 Michigan
The Wolverines enter the CWPA Western Division clash with a 14-8 record and a perfect 6-0 mark in the division. Michigan has won six-straight matches after dropping three in a row. The match up will be for the regular season CWPA Western Division title and the No. 1 seed at the Western Division Championship. The Wolverines have not lost a regular season conference match in their four-year history.
Indiana and Michigan played earlier in the season with the Hoosiers picking up a 7-6 victory in Ann Arbor. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Michigan responded to take the lead at the half, 3-2. The score went back-and-forth for much of match with the Hoosiers prevailing thanks to three fourth-period goals. Senior Kandace Waldthaler finished with a hat trick to go along with four drawn ejections. Senior Krista Peterson, junior Janis Pardy, freshman Carolyn Conway and junior Emily Schmitt each added tallies in the victory. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner finished with 11 saves between the pipes.
Michigan sophomore Shana Welch ranks fourth in the nation in goals with 44 on the season. Junior Megan Hausmann ranks second on the team with 20 goals to go along with 14 assists. Senior Erin Brown has 18 goals and 18 assists, while fellow classmate Sheetal Narsai has 17 goals and 13 assists. Senior Jo Antonsen leads Michigan with 23 assists on the season. Senior goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong has played in 20 matches for the Maize and Blue. She ranks third in the nation in saves with 139. Armstrong also has a goals against average of 5.83.
The Hoosiers and Wolverines are no strangers to one another, having played on 17 occasions over the last five years. When these two teams get together, it is almost assured to be a great match. Six of the last 17 matches have gone to overtime, with 11 of the last 17 being decided by two or less goals.
Scouting Cal Lutheran
The Regals enter the Wolverine Invitational at 5-6 on the season. Cal Lutheran is currently ranked sixth in the National Division III poll. Cal Lutheran has picked up victories over CSU-Monterey Bay (12-9), Sonoma State "B" (8-2), La Verne (8-6), CSU-East Bay (8-7) and Pepperdine (10-9) on the season. The Regals have lost their last two matches to Wagner (8-6) and CSU-Bakersfield (11-7).
The match up will be the first ever between Indiana and Cal Lutheran. The Regals play in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) which will have an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship in Ann Arbor, Mich., May 13-15.
Scouting Brown
Brown enters the Wolverine Invitational with a 6-4 record on the season and the No. 6-ranking in the CWPA poll. The Bears are 3-1 in the CWPA Northern Division, picking up victories over Harvard (6-4), Utica (22-1) and Queens (21-6). Brown's lone conference loss came to No. 15 Hartwick (18-8). Brown also has picked up victories over Maryland (16-7), George Washington (10-3) and Dartmouth (16-1) coupled with losses to Bucknell (6-5), Princeton (8-4) and Harvard (6-3).
Sophomore Elizabeth Balassone leads Brown with 16 goals on the season. Senior Diana Livermore is second on the team with 15 markers. Sophomore Paige Lansing has 12 tallies on the year, while freshman Alexis Blaxberg and sophomore Caitlin Fahey round out the double-digit scorers for Brown with 10 each. Blaxberg also leads the team with 12 assists on the year.
Freshman goalkeeper Anne Deggelman has played every minute in net for the Bears this season. Deggelman has 53 saves on the year to go with a goals against average of 6.00. Fahey tops the Bears on the defensive end with 20 steals.
The Hoosiers are 6-0 all-time against the Bears. IU and Brown have met at the CWPA Eastern Championship each of the last two years. The Hoosiers defeated the Bears, 9-4, in the third-place match last season and won the Eastern Championship with a 7-5 victory in 2003.
Scouting No. 7 Loyola Marymount
The Lions enter at 11-3 and have a match on Thursday, March 17 against No. 1 UCLA. LMU won three straight after falling in back-to-back matches at the Gaucho Invite. The Lions have beaten San Jose State (9-8), Chapman (16-1) and UC-San Diego (7-6) since falling in matches to Long Beach State (7-4) and Hawaii (9-6). The Lions are coming off a 10-day break since defeating UC-San Diego.
Junior utility Stacia Peterson leads LMU with 24 goals. Freshman two-meter Christine Robinson has 19 goals, while sophomore utility Katie Hicks has 18. Freshman utility Rosanna Tomiuk and sophomore two-meter Dora Szabolcsi round out the LMU double-digit goal scorers with 15 and 14, respectively.
Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Riddell has played every game between the pipes for LMU. Riddell has 122 saves on the season to go along with a goals against average of 5.21. Senior driver Jessica Conner leads the Lions with 12 steals, while sophomore utility Cara Colton and Robinson both have 11 swipes.
The Hoosiers and Lions have eight common opponents. The group includes UC-Irvine, UC-San Diego, Long Beach State, Hawaii, San Diego State, Michigan, San Jose State and California. LMU is 7-3 against the group, including a 1-1 mark against Long Beach State and a 2-0 record against UC-San Diego. Indiana is 5-4 against the group, including going 1-1 against California. Both teams have lost to California and Long Beach State once, while IU has lost to San Jose State and UC-Irvine. LMU other defeat came at the hands of Hawaii.
Indiana is 0-6 all-time against Loyola Marymount. The two teams met last season in Bloomington during the Fluid Four Challenge with LMU picking up a 13-7 victory.
Hoosiers Among the National Rankings
A trio of Hoosiers rank among the top 20 in the country in scoring. Senior Krista Peterson is tied for eighth in the nation with 34 goals on the season. Freshman Carolyn Conway is 15th in the country in tallies with 29, while senior Kandace Waldthaler is one spot down in 16th with 28 markers.
As a team, Indiana is seventh in the nation in scoring with an average of 9.1 goals per game. The Hoosiers have scored 192 goals in 21 matches this season. Defensively, IU is ranked 11th, allowing 6.1 goals per game. Indiana has allowed 129 goals in 21 matches this season.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner continues rank among the national leaders in saves. The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native is fourth in the national with 138 stops on the season.
Firsts in Hoosier History
The Indiana women's water polo team has been resetting the program's record book so far this season. Here is a look at some of the firsts for the program in 2005:
- The victories over then-No. 6 Cal and then-No. 7 Hawaii marked the first time in school history the Hoosiers defeated a pair of top-10 opponents in the same day.
- IU has defeated a program-best four top-10 opponents this season. The group of opponents includes then-No. 10 San Diego State on Feb. 26, then-No. 6 California on Feb. 12, then-No. 9 Hawaii on Feb. 12 and then-No. 9 Michigan on Jan. 29.
-The win over California marks the highest-ranked opponent IU has defeated in the program's annals.
- The victories over Cal, San Diego State and Hawaii were the first for the Hoosiers against those western schools.
- The Cream and Crimson was ranked sixth in the Feb. 6 Women's Collegiate Top 20. It was the highest ranking in the program's history. Previously, the highest ranking the water polo program held was ninth on five separate occasions. The Hoosiers were ninth in the Jan. 21, Feb. 18 and Feb. 25 polls in 2004 as well as the April 30 and May 14 polls of 2003.
- The Hoosiers defeated then-No. 9 Michigan, 7-6, at the Michigan Invitational. It was the first victory over the Wolverines in their last 16 matches. The victory also was the first over Michigan since the Wolverines became a varsity program in 2001.
- Indiana will have a chance to capture its first regular season CWPA Western Division title on March 18. The Hoosiers will battle Michigan for the crown in Ann Arbor. Both teams are currently 6-0 in the Western Division.
