Pardy's Thud Dooms Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - It was the typical back-and-forth action someone would expect between two rivals. Junior Janis Pardy's lob shot landed in the back of the net sending the No. 9 Indiana women's water polo team to a 7-6 sudden victory win over No. 11 Michigan. For the second time in as many matches against the Wolverines, the Hoosiers came from behind and defeated their division rival in Canham Natatorium.
The win not only improved the Hoosiers' mark to 15-7 on the year and 7-0 in the division, but it clinched the regular season Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division title. It was the first such title for the Hoosiers, and it also marked the first time Michigan had been defeated in a regular season division match. The Wolverines fell to 14-9 on the year and 6-1 in the Western Division. IU will now be the No. 1 seed in the Western Division Championship, April 22-23 in Grove City, Pa.
"I was really pleased with the way the ladies grinded out a victory against Michigan," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We are a tired team right now with all the travel we have done over the last few weeks. This win gives us the No. 1 seed in the Division Championship and puts us in a good position for the top seed at Easterns."
The Wolverines led after three periods of play thanks to the power play. Michigan scored a 6-on-4 goal and a 6-on-5 goal in the third period of play. U of M sophomore Shana Welch put Michigan on top with a backhand shot with 1:27 remaining in the third.
Junior Emily Schmitt knotted the match in the fourth. With IU on the power play thanks to a drawn ejection from senior Kandace Waldthaler, Schmitt scored her 17th goal of the season with a perimeter shot into the left corner of the net.
It appeared as though the Hoosiers would score with under 20 seconds remaining in the fourth to clinch the win. After a turnover, the Hoosiers were on the break with sophomore Kristin Zernicke and freshman Carolyn Conway in front of everyone. Zernicke fed Conway on the right side, but the Newport Beach, Calif., native's shot toward the right corner was denied by Michigan goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong.
Michigan struck first in the first of two three-minute overtime periods. Welch scored with a 6-on-5 skip shot with 41 seconds remaining in the first OT. The goal was her third of the match and put the Maize and Blue up 6-5.
Indiana evened the match with 1:14 remaining in the second overtime. Senior Krista Peterson scored her 35th goal of the season into the right side of the net. Pardy drew an ejection to give IU the man-advantage. The Canadian then found Peterson cross-pool with a pass to set up the equalizer.
Pardy not only set up the equalizing goal, but quieted the Michigan faithful with an emphatic thud. The junior attacker lobbed a shot from the left side of the perimeter into the right corner, just over Armstrong. Her second goal of the match with 54 seconds showing on the clock gave IU the 7-6 triumph.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner played a major roll for the Hoosiers between the pipes. The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native stopped the Maize and Blue on both of their possessions in the first three-minute sudden victory period. The saves brought Goldner's total to 12 on the night. It marked the 33rd time in her career she had double-digit saves in a game.
Like it had in the match against Michigan earlier this season, IU jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Waldthaler drew and scored a four-meter penalty shot just over two minutes into the match. Conway added a backhand from the post with 1:18 remaining in the half, pushing the lead to two. It looked as though the Hoosiers would go to the half with the lead, but Michigan scored a pair of goals in the final 47 seconds to draw even.
Waldthaler finished with two goals on the night. She also drew five ejections, putting the Hoosiers on the power play. Pardy added a trio of assists and a pair of steals to go along with her two markers. Zernicke led IU with four steals on the defensive end.
"Kandace was a terror in the post," King said. "She really dominated in the two-meter and created a lot of problems for Michigan. She gave us the advantage numerous times and really kept us going when we looked tired."
The Hoosiers will return to action on Saturday, March 19, in the Wolverine Invitational at Canham Natatorium. IU will battle Cal Lutheran for the first time in the program's history at 11:30 a.m. The Regals enter the match ranked sixth in the Division III rankings. The Cream and Crimson will then take on the Brown Bears at 6:20 p.m. on Saturday. Indiana will close at the Wolverine Invite against No. 7 Loyola Marymount at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
