Quirarte Named Big Ten Golfer of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana men's golfer Santiago Quirarte has been named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Thursday. The honor is the first of the freshman's career and the first for an IU golfer this season.
Quirarte netted his best finish as a collegian, ending the Pioneer Classic (March 15-16) in fourth place. After shooting a 6-under-par 138 total with an opening-round 71 and a 67 in round two, Quirarte closed with an even-par 72 for a 210 mark.
"This is a deserving honor for Santiago after an outstanding tournament," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "He is one of the hardest working young men I have ever had the privilege of coaching, and I'm glad to see his hard work paying off. I think we'll see more of these Big Ten awards for Santiago in the years to come."
Quirarte's 210-stroke total was the lowest of any Big Ten golfer this past week. The Queretaro, Mexico, native also recorded season-best 18-, 36- and 54-hole scores in the event, leading the Cream and Crimson to a third-place finish.
He is the first Indiana golfer to win the award since Jeff Overton captured three consecutive weekly accolades from April 20-May 5, 2004. It is also the seventh time in the last two seasons a Hoosier has earned the honor (Overton five times, Heath Peters one time and Quirarte one time).
On the season, Quirarte has appeared in all seven tournaments Indiana has participated in, carding a 74.68 scoring average in 19 rounds.
Quirarte and the Hoosiers return to the course Monday-Tuesday, March 28-29, at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C. The Intercollegiate will be held on Pinehurst No. 8.
