ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 9 Indiana water polo team picked up a 4-2 victory over the Brown Bears to close out the first day of the Wolverine Invitational. The Hoosiers scored three 6-on-5 goals and held Brown scoreless until the 1:28 mark of the fourth period in the victory. The Cream and Crimson improved to 17-7 on the year.

"We did not execute on offense," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "Before the game, I told the ladies to do the things we do in practice. I wasn't sure what team I was watching for most of that game. Hopefully, tomorrow we will be better prepared to face Loyola Marymount."

The Hoosiers got on the board first as senior Krista Peterson scored from the right side of the perimeter with IU on the power play. Freshman Carolyn Conway drew the ejection to give Indiana the man-advantage, and junior Janis Pardy found Peterson for the goal. Peterson's marker would be the only one of the half as IU led, 1-0, at the break.

The Hoosiers scored three in the third period to push the advantage to 4-0. Conway once again put the Cream and Crimson on the power play, drawing the ejection in the post. Pardy set up senior Kandace Waldthaler with a lob, and the Fairfield, Calif., native tipped it into the back of the net. It was her 33rd goal on the season and the fourth straight match she has scored in for the Hoosiers.

IU's third goal came by way of the 6-on-5 advantage with 1:53 remaining in the third period. Sophomore Kristin Zernicke drew the ejection on the drive to give the Hoosiers the advantage. Junior Emily Schmitt score on a shot just under the goalkeeper's arm into the ride side of the net. Conway picked up the assist on the play dishing the ball out from the post.

Peterson scored her second goal of the match just as Brown gained even strength with 35 seconds remaining in the third. The Portland, Ore., native pumped faked a few times before scoring into the left corner of the net from the right side of the perimeter. The senior attacker/center leads the Hoosiers with 40 goals on the season. She become only the second Hoosier, joining former All-American Kristin Stanford, to score 40 or more goals all four years of her career.

The Hoosier defense would hold tough for much of the match, shutting out Brown until the final minutes of the fourth period. The Bears tacked on goals with 1:28 remaining and 43 seconds remaining in the fourth period to draw within two.

Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner turned in another stellar performance between the pipes. The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native finished with 10 saves, the 34th time in her career she has amassed double-digit saves. Junior Bridget McKeon and freshman Linda Calvert finished with two steals apiece on the defensive end.

The Cream and Crimson will battle No. 7 Loyola Marymount to close out the Wolverine Invitational. The match is set for 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 20, in Canham Natatorium. The Hoosiers are 0-6 all-time against the Lions, including a 13-7 defeat in Bloomington last season.
