Rally Falls Short Against LMU

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - In a tale of two halves, the No. 9 Indiana women's water polo team came up on the wrong end of a 6-4 defeat to No. 7 Loyola Marymount. The Lions jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the opening half of play, and the Hoosiers' second-half rally fell short despite opportunities. The Cream and Crimson fell to 17-8 on the year and finished the weekend with a 3-1 mark.
LMU scored the first three goals of the match before the Hoosiers could get on the board. LMU junior Stacia Peterson scored from the perimeter in both the first and second periods to pace the Lions to the advantage. Sophomore Katie Hicks added a skip shot to bring the LMU lead to 3-0 two minutes into the second period.
Freshman Linda Calvert brought the Hoosiers back within two with 2:33 remaining in the opening half. The San Gabriel, Calf., native scored into the left corner of the net from the top of the perimeter. The goal was her 11th on the season with junior Bridget McKeon picking up the assist on the play.
Loyola Marymount rebounded with a goal on their next possession. Peterson notched her third goal of the game just 29 seconds later to push the LMU lead back to three. Junior Katie Murray added the Lions' final goal of the half. Her shot from the perimeter was just out of the reach of senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner , finishing in the left corner of the net.
With 4:40 remaining in the third period, senior Kandace Waldthaler skipped a four-meter penalty shot into the left side of the net. The Fairfield, Calif., product drew the four-meter penalty going after a rebound in the post. It was her 34th marker of the season and fourth four-meter penalty goal.
The Lions once again pushed the lead back to four with 2:25 remaining in the third. Hicks scored her second goal on the game with LMU on the power play.
The Hoosiers responded with a 6-on-5 goal of their own less than a minute later. Sophomore Kristin Zernicke found junior Emily Schmitt on the left side, and Schmitt skipped the shot into the left corner. Waldthaler gave the Hoosiers the man-advantage, drawing the ejection in the post. It was one of her six drawn kickouts against the Lions.
Waldthaler had a chance to cut the Loyola Marymount lead to two entering the final period, but the senior attacker/center `s four-meter penalty shot was blocked wide by LMU goalkeeper sophomore Rachel Riddell. The penalty was a result of a flurry of shots from the Hoosiers. After an initial shot was blocked down by LMU, junior Clare Meadows quickly garnered the rebound and fired a shot at the cage. An LMU defender was whistle for the four-meter penalty, blocking the ball with two-hands.
Midway through the fourth period it appeared as though the Hoosiers had cut the lead to only two with a 6-on-5 goal. Junior Janis Pardy found Waldthaler for a tip in the post, but the pass came from outside the two-meter into the two-meter, resulting in the Hoosier turnover.

Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner continued her strong play in net. Goldner finished with seven saves against the Lions. Zernicke led the Hoosiers on the defensive end with four steals.
The Hoosiers will have two weeks off before returning to the pool at home in the Fluid Five Challenge. Indiana will host No. 9 San Jose State, No. 11 Michigan, No. 14 UC-Davis and Colorado State at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center, April 2-3. On Saturday, April 2, the Hoosiers will battle Colorado State at 1 p.m., followed by a 7:30 p.m. match up with UC-Davis. The Cream and Crimson will face San Jose State on Sunday, April 3, at 11:30 a.m.
