Indiana Remains Top 10

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the fourth straight week, the Indiana women's water polo team was ranked ninth in the Collegiate Top 20. The Hoosiers improved to 17-8 on the season with a 3-1 record in Michigan, March 18-20. The Cream and Crimson also won its first regular season Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division title by defeating then-No. 11 Michigan, 7-6, in sudden victory on March 18.
The Hoosiers finished CWPA Western Division play with a 7-0 mark, the first time in school history the program had gone undefeated in conference play. In five seasons in the CWPA, Indiana has gone 34-5 in league action. The Hoosiers victory over Michigan on March 18 was the first regular season CWPA loss for the Wolverines in their four-year divion history.
Along with being ranked ninth in the country, the Hoosiers once again garnered the top spot in the CWPA poll. Indiana has been ranked in the top spot in the conference eight of the nine weeks this season. After a 7-6 win over Michigan at the season opening Michigan Invitational, the Hoosiers took over the top spot and have yet to relinquish it.
The Cream and Crimson have taken on 13 of the top 20 teams in the country to date. The Hoosiers own a 7-8 mark against those 13 opponents with a 1-1 record against current No. 7 California and a 2-0 mark against No. 13 Michigan. The Hoosiers have also faced No. 1 UCLA (L, 14-2), No. 2 USC (L, 9-5), No. 3 Long Beach State (L, 15-6), No. 3 Stanford (L, 11-4), No. 5 Hawaii (W, 8-7), No. 6 Loyola Marymount (L, 6-4), No. 10 San Jose State (L, 7-6), No. 11 UC-Irvine (L, 6-2), No. 12 San Diego State (W, 7-6), No. 18 Arizona State (W, 6-5) and No. 19 UC-San Diego (W, 7-4).
Four Hoosier victories this season have come against teams that were ranked in the top 10 at the time. Michigan was ranked ninth when the Hoosiers defeated them on Jan. 29. California was ranked sixth at the time IU defeated them, while Hawaii was ranked seventh at the time of the Hoosiers' victory. The final top 10 foe to fall to Indiana was San Diego State, who was ranked 10th when IU defeated them, 7-6, at the Gaucho Invite.
A trio of Hoosiers are ranked among the top 25 in the nation in scoring. Senior attacker/center Krista Peterson leads the Hoosiers with 40 markers on the year and is tied for ninth in the country. Senior attacker/center Kandace Waldthaler and freshman center Carolyn Conway rank 20th and 23rd, respectively, in goals. Waldthaler has tallied 34 goals on the season, while Conway has 31.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner ranks fourth in the nation in saves with a 167 on the year. She is also 13th in saves per game with 8.0 per match.

IU will face Colorado State on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m., in the Counsilman-Bilingsley Aquatic Center. The Hoosiers will return that night for a 7:30 p.m., match up with the Aggies of UC-Davis. Indiana will cap the Fluid Five Challenge with a 11:30 a.m., match against San Jose State on Sunday, April 3. Seniors Krista Peterson, Jessica Goldner and Kandace Waldthlaer will play in their final regular season matches at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
