Overton Leads, Hoosiers Third at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. - In search of his seventh collegiate championship, Jeff Overton leads after two rounds at the Pinehurst Invitational, while the Indiana men's golf team sits in third place in the 12-team field. Playing on the par-72 Pinehurst No. 8 Course, the Hoosiers battled gusty and swirling winds reaching 30 miles per hour to card a 595 (300-295), trailing SMU (292-294) by nine shots and Xavier by six shots (307-282).
Following rounds of 69 and 70, Overton leads the field heading into the final day of the tournament. The All-American's 4-under-par 139 is good for a one stroke lead over Andy Pope of Xavier and a two-shot advantage over Colt Knost of SMU.
"It was a really solid day of golf for Jeff Overton," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "The conditions were as tough as any you could play in. He just played an absolute solid round of golf."
Overton, recently named one of 10 semifinalists for the Hogan Award, is looking for his second title of the season in addition to the seventh of his career. He claimed medalist honors at the Xavier Invitational during the fall (Oct. 11-12).
After a strong finish at the Pioneer Classic (tie for 31st on March 15-16), Scott Seibert continued his impressive play. The junior corralled a 151 total with rounds of 76 and 75, placing him in a tie for 16th entering the final 18. Seibert has four career top-20 finishes, including a tie for 18th at the Xavier Invitational, his best finish of the season.
"This was a good day of golf for Scott even though he gave away some shots. For him to be in 16th place is pretty impressive after today's conditions," said Mayer.
Sitting just outside the top 20 in a tie for 22nd is Heath Peters. The senior from Garrett, Ind., opened with a 78 and bounced back with a 74 on the second 18, giving him a two-round 152 total.
"Heath struggled in the morning. He made four birdies but still shot a 78," said Mayer. "He has had a hard time scoring, but he is getting close. It is a matter of time for Heath."
On the heels of his fourth-place finish at the Pioneer Classic and Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors, Santiago Quirarte is tied for 26th at 153. The freshman carded an opening-round 77 and closed the afternoon with a 76 in round two.
In the fifth spot, junior Brad Marek completed the opening 36 holes tied for 45th with 79s in each round.
"Overall, we still are not quite where we need to be," said Mayer. "We are getting closer and closer each tournament, but we are not there yet. Tomorrow, we need to come out on the same page and take care of business."
The Cream and Crimson will get the opportunity to 'take care of business' in the final round of the Invitational on Tuesday, March 29. A shotgun start is set for 8:30 a.m. EDT.
