Overton, Seibert Finish in Top Five at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. - Senior Jeff Overton and junior Scott Seibert garnered top-five finishes, leading the Indiana men's golf team to third place at the Pinehurst Invitational. Overton and Seibert ended the Invite in second and fourth, respectively, while the Hoosiers closed with a final-round 293. IU's 888 total (300-295-293) fell 13 shots behind champion SMU (292-294-289) and 12 strokes behind second-place Xavier (307-282-287) for its second straight third-place finish.
Closing with an even-par 72, Overton concluded the tournament with a 5-under-par 211 (69-70-72), one shot behind medalist winner Colt Knost of SMU (71-70-69). The All-American earned his seventh career runner-up finish and his third this season.
In addition, the Evansville, Ind., native now has 21 career top fives and 26 career top 10s, including six top fives in eight events this season.
"This was a great golf tournament for Jeff. He had an outstanding three days no matter what place he finished in," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer.
Firing the low round of any golfer in the field, Scott Seibert recorded a final-round 67, the second-lowest score of his career, to capture his first career top 10. The junior's career-best round came on the second 18 at the Xavier Invitational, where he claimed a 66 on Oct.13, 2003. Seibert completed the tournament at 218 (76-75-67).
"Scott turned in a great round and played his best tournament as a Hoosier," said Mayer. "His play was a great pick me up for the team. We need that from Scott. Hopefully this round will give him confidence, and he will continue to play strong."
After netting the best finish of his career, fourth place at the Pioneer Classic (March 15-16), freshman Santiago Quirarte generated his second-best placing, tying for 15th. Quirarte closed with his low round at the Invitational, a 75, to go along with an opening-round 77 and a second-round 76.
In the fourth spot, senior Heath Peters tied for 31st place. The Garrett, Ind., native finished with a 54-hole 231 total following rounds of 78, 74 and 79.
Rounding out the line up, junior Brad Marek closed out the event tied for 52nd with 238 (79-79-80).
"I still do not think we are playing as well as we can play," said Mayer. "We are getting closer each tournament. Jeff is doing a great job and Scott and Santiago are in the mix. Once we get Heath going, we will be a tough team to beat."
Up next, the Cream and Crimson return to the links at the Boilermaker Invitational. The tournament will be held on Saturday-Sunday, April 16-17, in West Lafayette, Ind.
