IU Hosts Fluid Five Challenge

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 9 Indiana women's water polo team will host the 2005 Fluid Five Challenge in Bloomington on Saturday, April 2, and Sunday, April 3. No. 10 San Jose State, No. 13 Michigan, No. 14 UC-Davis and Colorado State join the Hoosiers in the Fluid Five.
It will be the first and only home regular season event for the Hoosiers at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Fluid Five Challenge will also be the final regular season home event in the careers of seniors Jessica Goldner, Krista Peterson and Kandace Waldthaler.
Michigan and Colorado State will open the Invitational at 9 a.m. on Saturday. UC-Davis and San Jose State follow that up with a 10:30 a.m. match. The Hoosiers open against the Rams of Colorado State at 1 p.m. Saturday will be capped off with a night session in which Michigan battles San Jose State at 6 p.m., and IU takes on UC-Davis at 7:30 p.m. Sunday will consist of four matches, starting with a 9 a.m. showdown between San Jose State and Colorado State. At 10 a.m., Michigan battles UC-Davis, followed by an 11:30 a.m. contest between IU and San Jose State. UC-Davis and Colorado State close out the Fluid Five Challenge at 12:30 p.m.

Scouting Colorado State
The Rams enter the Fluid Five with a 4-7 record. CSU last competed in the Claremont Tournament, March 19-20, picking up a 2-2 record. Colorado State recorded victories over La Verne (8-4) and Cal Tech (17-7). The Rams also own victories over CWPA Western Division foes Penn State-Behrend (18-0) and Slippery Rock (10-3).
Freshman driver Annie Quinn leads the Rams in scoring with 12 goals on the season. Freshman driver/defender Leah Kelly ranks second on the squad with 10 markers on the campaign.
The Rams are in their first season as a varsity program. CSU played its first ever matches at the Michigan Invitational earlier this season. The Rams are led by head coach John Mattos.
Indiana and CSU met during the Michigan Invitational earlier this season. The Cream and Crimson picked up a 13-3 win on the strength of a hat trick from freshman Carolyn Conway.
Scouting No. 10 San Jose State
San Jose State comes in with a 6-11 overall record, including a 1-5 mark in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Its last time out SJSU, currently ranked 10th in the nation, dropped a pair of matches on March 25-26. The Spartans lost a 13-7 decision to No. 2 USC before falling to No. 8 UC-Santa Barbara, 10-9. SJSU is led by head coach Lou Tully.
Senior defender Mary Beth Cox is the Spartans leading scorer with 25 goals on the season. Senior two-meter Laura Scott and junior defender Katie Morgan also have eclipsed the 20-goal plateau on the season with 23 and 21, respectively.
Junior goalkeeper Krissy Hansell and freshman goalkeeper Kendra Adama have split time in net for San Jose State this season. Hansell has 61 saves on the year, while Adama has 64 blocks. In the Spartans last match against No. 8 UC-Santa Barbara, Adama had 15 saves in the affair.
The Hoosiers will look for revenge against the Spartans, following a 7-6 loss earlier in the year at the Daktronics Gaucho Invitational. The Spartans jumped out to a 5-1 lead at the half, before the Hoosiers rallied in the second half. Indiana is 1-5 all-time against San Jose State with its lone victory coming during the 2003 Michigan Invitational.
Scouting No. 14 UC-Davis
The Aggies are riding a six-match winning streak entering the Fluid Five. UC-Davis comes in at 13-11 on the season and ranked 14th in the nation. Head coach Jamey Wright enters his 21st season as the head man at UC-Davis.
During the month of March, the Aggies were hot, winning all six of their matches. It started with wins at home against Santa Clara (11-7) and Arizona State (8-6) on March 5. After defeating UC-Santa Cruz, 13-2, at home, the Aggies knocked off then-No. 8 UC-Santa Barbara, 8-7, in sudden-victory overtime on a goal from freshman Christi Raycraft. On March 29, UC-Davis defeated No. 15 Hartwick, 10-9, and CSU-Monterey Bay, 15-2.
UC-Davis is led in scoring by Raycraft's 24 goals, while sophomore Cassie Schaefer is second with 23 tallies on the season. Schaefer also has 12 assists and 23 steals, while Raycraft has 27 steals and 40 kickouts earned. Senior Sara Rees leads the Aggies with 29 steals during the year. Senior Nicole Hall and sophomore Lina Moore have both seen action in goal for the Aggies. Hall has started nine games with 48 saves and a goals against average of 8.28. Moore has started 14 matches with 94 saves and a goals against average of 6.36.
The Hoosiers and Aggies have only meet on one occasion, a UC-Davis 10-3 victory at home in 1999.
Scouting No. 13 Michigan
The Wolverines enter the Fluid Five with a 17-10 mark and the No. 13-ranking in the nation. Michigan is 6-1 in the CWPA Western Division and is coming off a 3-1 record at the Wolverine Invitational, March 19-20. The Maize and Blue picked up wins over Brown (8-3), Wheaton (14-1) and Cal Lutheran (12-2). The Wolverines lone loss at the hands of No. 7 Loyola Marymount, 8-7.
Michigan sophomore Shana Welch ranks fourth in the nation in goals with 51 on the season. Junior Megan Hausmann and senior Sheetal Narsai rank second on the team with 24 goals apiece to go along with 17 assists each. Senior Erin Brown has 20 goals and 25 assists, while fellow classmate Jo Antonsen leads Michigan with 31 assists on the season. Senior goalkeeper Betsey Armstrong has played in 24 matches for the Maize and Blue. She ranks third in the nation in saves with 177. Armstrong also has a goals against average of 5.66.
The Maize and Blue are led by Matt Anderson, who enters his third year at the helm of Michigan. The Wolverines are 69-29 under Andersons' direction.
Firsts in Hoosier History
The Indiana women's water polo team has been resetting the program's record book so far this season. Here is a look at some of the firsts for the program in 2005:
- Victories over then-No. 6 Cal and then-No. 7 Hawaii marked the first time in school history the Hoosiers defeated a pair of top-10 opponents in the same day.
- IU has defeated a program-best four top-10 opponents this season. The group of opponents includes then-No. 10 San Diego State on Feb. 26, then-No. 6 California on Feb. 12, then-No. 9 Hawaii on Feb. 12 and then-No. 9 Michigan on Jan. 29.
-The win over California marks the highest-ranked opponent IU has defeated in the program's annals.
- The victories over Cal, San Diego State and Hawaii were the first for the Hoosiers against those western schools.
- The Cream and Crimson was ranked sixth in the Feb. 6 Women's Collegiate Top 20. It was the highest ranking in the program's history. Previously, the highest ranking the water polo program held was ninth on five separate occasions. The Hoosiers were ninth in the Jan. 21, Feb. 18 and Feb. 25 polls in 2004 as well as the April 30 and May 14 polls of 2003.
- The Hoosiers defeated then-No. 9 Michigan, 7-6, at the Michigan Invitational. It was the first victory over the Wolverines in their last 16 matches. The victory also was the first over Michigan since the Wolverines became a varsity program in 2001.
- Indiana captured its first regular season CWPA Western Division title on March 18. The Hoosiers defeated Michigan, 7-6, on a goal by junior Janis Pardy with 54 second remaining in the first sudden victory period.
2005 Indiana Seniors
The Fluid Five Challenge will be the final regular season home event in the careers of seniors Jessica Goldner, Krista Peterson and Kandace Waldthaler. The trio has amassed some impressive credentials during their Hoosier careers, including leading Indiana to the first regular CWPA Western Division title in school history, on March 18. The trio has also exemplified the term student-athlete. Combined the group has received five all-conference honors, five academic All-America nominations, two All-America honors and ammassed a record of 84-42.
"This group of seniors has been very instrumental in our program," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "Not only are they good water polo players, but they personify the term student-athlete with their work both in the classroom and in the water. We will definitely miss this group because they have helped in taking IU Water Polo to the next level. I can not say enough about their hard work and what they have meant to the program. I know each one of them will be successful in life."
Senior Goalkeeper Jessica Goldner
A four-year starter in goal, Goldner is having an impressive 2005 season. She ranks fourth in the nation in saves entering the weekend, and is the all-time school leader in saves and shots faced. Entering the weekend, Goldner had 838 career saves to go along with a goals against average of 5.64. On 35 occasions during her Hoosier career, Goldner has recorded a double-digit save performance, including a career-best 19 against Princeton in the 2003 CWPA Eastern Championship. Indiana is 23-12 when Goldner records double-digit saves. She has earned second team CWPA All-Western Division honors during her sophomore and junior seasons. In 2002 and 2004, Goldner was recognized for her performance in the classroom as well being named an American Water Polo Coaches Association (AWPCA) Academic All-American. She is the daughter of Steve and Chris Goldner, and will graduate from Indiana with a degree in elementary education.
Senior Attacker/Center Krista Peterson
Peterson has etched her name in the Hoosier annuals as well. She is one of only two Hoosiers to record 200 plus goals in a season. She is also one of only two Hoosiers to earn AWPCA All-America honors. The Portland, Ore., native was recognized as an honorable mention All-American selection in both 2003 and 2004. She became the first player from the East Coast to earn first team All-NCAA Championship honors during the 2003 Final Four. At the 2003 CWPA Eastern Championship, Peterson was named the most valuable player for her performance in leading IU to its first title. She ranks second on the Hoosiers' career goals list with 211 markers. She is second in career assists (109) and seventh in steals (114). Peterson has also amassed 30 career hat tricks, games in which the Hoosiers are 27-3. In 2002 and 2004, Peterson was named an AWPCA Academic All-American. She is the daughter of Sonja Peterson and Eric Peterson. She will graduate from Indiana with a degree in economics and political science.
Senior Attacker/Center Kandace Waldthaler
Waldthaler joined the Hoosiers as a transfer prior to the 2004 season and made an immediate impact. During her rookie campaign, Waldthaler was named first team CWPA All-Western Division. She scored 41 goals during her first season with the Hoosiers and led the team in kickouts earned and four-meter penalty shot goals. Waldthaler ranked second on the team in goals and hat trick with seven. This season, Waldthaler ranks among the top 20 nationally in goals. She, once again, leads the team in kickouts earned and four-meter penalty shots. In her brief two-year career, Waldthaler already ranks 11th on the career goals list. The Fairfield, Calif., native has 11 games with a hat trick, in which Indiana is 10-1. On three occasions during her Hoosier career, Walthaler has been named the CWPA Western Division Player of the Week, including twice times this season. She has also excelled in the classroom at IU, earning AWPCA Academic All-America honors a season ago. Waldthaler is the daughter of Kerry and Carl Waldthaler. She will graduate from Indiana will a degree in exercise science.
