Waldthaler Named POW

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Senior Kandace Waldthaler earned her second Collegiate Water Polo Western Division Player of the Week honor on March 3, the conference office announced. The Fairfield, Calif., native helped the Hoosiers to a 10th-place finish and a 3-2 mark at the Daktronics Gaucho Invitational, Feb. 25-27.
She also earned the honor on Feb. 3, following her performance at the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 29-30. It is also the third player of the week accolade of her career after she earned once in 2004. It marks the third time this season a Hoosier has earned the Western Division Player of the Week distinction. Senior Jessica Goldner earned the honor following her performance at the Stanford Invitational, Feb. 12-13.
Waldthaler had seven goals in the Gaucho Invitational for the Cream and Crimson to go along with three assists, four steals and 11 drawn ejections. She was 7-of-12 shooting on the weekend. The Hoosiers picked up victories over Cal State-San Bernardino (14-4), then-No. 15 UC-San Diego (7-4) and then-No. 10 San Diego State (7-6).
She had her best game of the weekend against then-No. 10 San Diego State. Waldthaler notched her ninth career hat trick in the match up to go along with an assist, three steals and five drawn ejections. One of those drawn ejections was a four-meter penalty, which she converted for the goal. She helped the Hoosiers over come a pair of two-goal deficits against the Aztecs. The victory over the Aztecs was the fourth time this season the Hoosiers defeated a team ranked in the top 10.

The Hoosiers (13-5) will return action in Tempe, Ariz. on Saturday, March 12. The Cream and Crimson will take on No. 4 Long Beach State at 1:30 p.m. PT and No. 13 UC-Irvine at 5 p.m. PT. Indiana will then face No. 17 Arizona State on Monday, March 14 at 1 p.m. PT. All three matches will be played at Arizona State.
