Hoosiers Travel to Arizona

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 9 Indiana women's water polo team will open up its 2005 spring break with a trip to Tempe, Ariz. for three matches against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation teams. The Cream and Crimson will take on No. 3 Long Beach State at 1:30 p.m. MT on Saturday, March 12, followed by a 5 p.m. MT match up with No. 13 UC-Irvine. The Hoosiers will cap the trip with a 6 p.m. MT match against No. 19 Arizona State on Sunday, March 13. All matches will be played at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on the campus of Arizona State.

Scouting No. 3 Long Beach State
Long Beach is coming off a 7-6 victory over then-No. 3 Stanford on Sunday, March 6, in Long Beach. The win propelled the 49ers to a 10-3 overall record and the No. 3 ranking in the nation.
The 49ers own victories over No. 10 San Jose State (6-3), Cal Baptist (7-4), then-No. 9 UCSB (7-5), then-No. 8 San Diego State (7-6), then-No. 14 UC-San Diego (9-4), then-No. 16 UC-Irvine, Redlands (16-5), then-No. 11 Michigan (6-4) and then-No. 5 Loyola Marymount (7-4). The three Long Beach State losses have come at the hands of then-No. 4 Loyola Marymount (10-7), No. 1 UCLA (7-3) and then-No. 3 Stanford (5-3).
The Hoosiers and 49ers have six common opponents. Long Beach State is 5-2 against the group with a 1-1 mark against Stanford, while the Hoosiers are 3-3.
The Cream and Crimson are 1-2 all-time against Long Beach State. The Hoosiers' lone victory came during the 1998 season, 6-3. The two teams squared off at the UC-San Diego Invitational last season with the 49ers picking up a 9-4 victory.
Scouting No. 13 UC-Irvine
UC-Irvine enters with a 6-7 record and the No. 13 ranking in the country. The Anteaters are 1-3 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Irvine has wins over then-No. 20 Santa Clara (6-4), then-No. 9 Santa Barbara (8-7), then-No. 15 UC-San Diego (7-5) and then-No. 12 UC-Davis (7-3).
The Hoosiers and Anteaters have five common opponents. The list of foes includes USC, San Diego State, UC-San Diego, Stanford and San Jose State. UC-Irvine is 1-4 against the group with its lone victory coming against UC-San Diego. IU is 2-3 against the opponents. The Hoosiers defeated San Diego State and UC-San Diego.
The Anteaters closed the 2004 season ranked 18th in the country after a 10-21 season overall, including a 3-8 record in the MPSF.
Sophomore driver Robyn Kaake leads UCI with 29 goals on the year. Senior two-meter Erica Nicholson and freshman driver Jessica Lewis ranks second on the team with 11 goals apiece, while senior driver Aleah Amr has 10 goals. Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Machanis and sophomore goalkeeper Kelly Woodbury have split time in the net for the Anteaters. Machanis has 32 saves and Woodbury has 28 saves on the year.
Indiana is 3-0 all-time against UC-Irvine. The Hoosiers last defeated the Anteaters, 6-5, at the UC-San Diego Invitational during the 2004 season.

The No. 19 Sun Devils are 4-8 on the year, including an 0-2 mark in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Arizona State owns victories over Cal Baptist (9-7), Marist (11-1), Pacific (12-5) and then-No. 14 Cal State-Northridge (6-3).
ASU will play UC-Irvine and Long Beach State at home before taking on the Hoosiers on Monday, March 14. The Sun Devils are on a three-game losing streak after falling last weekend to No. 6 California (10-2), No. 14 UC-Davis (8-6) and Pacific (6-4).
The Hoosiers and Sun Devils have three common opponents in UCLA, California and Michigan. ASU is 0-3 against the trio, while the Hoosiers are 2-2 with a 1-1 mark against California.
Sophomore driver Ashley Bower leads ASU in scoring with 19 goals and nine assists on the season. Sophomore utility Katie Hedley ranks second on the team in goals with15 and leads ASU with 10 assists. Junior two-meter Kimberlee Stevens also has double-digit goals for Arizona State with 10.
Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Sanderson and freshman goalkeeper Caylinn Wallace have split time in net for the Sun Devils. Sanderson has seen action in nine games with 53 saves, allowing 41 goals. Wallace has played in seven games with 45 saves, allowing 42 goals
The Hoosiers are 2-0 all-time against Arizona State. Indiana defeated the Sun Devils, 8-5, at Arizona State during the 2003 season. IU downed ASU, 6-5, in overtime at the Michigan Invitational last season.
Hoosiers Among the National Rankings
A trio of Hoosiers rank among the top 20 in the country in scoring. Senior Krista Peterson is tied for fifth in the nation with 32 goals on the season. Freshman Carolyn Conway is tied for eighth in the country in tallies with 27, while senior Kandace Waldthaler ranks tied for 18th with 24 markers.
As a team, Indiana is sixth in the nation in scoring with an average of 9.9 goals per game. The Hoosiers have scored 178 goals in 18 matches this season. Defensively, IU is ranked 11th, allowing 5.7 goals per game. Indiana has allowed 103 goals in 18 matches this season.
Senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner continues rank among the national leaders in saves. The Los Altos Hills, Calif., native is fourth in the national with 116 stops on the season.
Firsts in Hoosier History
The Indiana women's water polo team has been resetting the program's record book so far this season. Here is a look at some of the firsts for the program in 2005:
- The victories over then-No. 6 Cal and then-No. 7 Hawaii marked the first time in school history the Hoosiers defeated a pair of top-10 opponents in the same day.
- IU has defeated a program-best four top-10 opponents this season. The group of opponents includes then-No. 10 San Diego State on Feb. 26, then-No. 6 California on Feb. 12, then-No. 9 Hawaii on Feb. 12 and then-No. 9 Michigan on Jan. 29.
-The win over California marks the highest-ranked opponent IU has defeated in the program's annals.
- The victories over Cal, San Diego State and Hawaii were the first for the Hoosiers against those western schools.
- The Cream and Crimson was ranked sixth in the Feb. 6 Women's Collegiate Top 20. It was the highest ranking in the program's history. Previously, the highest ranking the water polo program held was ninth on five separate occasions. The Hoosiers were ninth in the Jan. 21, Feb. 18 and Feb. 25 polls in 2004 as well as the April 30 and May 14 polls of 2003.
- The Hoosiers defeated then-No. 9 Michigan, 7-6, at the Michigan Invitational. It was the first victory over the Wolverines in their last 16 matches. The victory also was the first over Michigan since the Wolverines became a varsity program in 2001.
- Indiana will have a chance to capture its first regular season CWPA Western Division title on March 18. The Hoosiers will battle Michigan for the crown in Ann Arbor. Both teams are currently 6-0 in the Western Division.
Two-Time Player of the Week
Senior Kandace Waldthaler earned the Western Division Player of the Week for the second time this season following her performance at the 2005 Daktronics Gaucho Invitational, Feb. 25-27. She also earned the honor following the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 29-30. The Fairfield, Calif., native led the Cream and Crimson to a 10th-place showing at the Gaucho Invite with a 3-2 record. She helped IU to a 2-1 mark leading the team with five goals at the Michigan Invite earlier in the season.
The honors are the second and third of Waldthaler's career. She was named the player of the week following her performance at the Aloha Classic on March 25, 2004. Waldthaler scored 13 goals in six games at the Classic, including three hat tricks.
Waldthaler had seven goals in the Gaucho Invitational for the Cream and Crimson to go along with three assists, four steals and 11 drawn ejections. She was 7-of-12 shooting on the weekend. The Hoosiers picked up victories over Cal State-San Bernardino (14-4), then-No. 15 UC-San Diego (7-4) and then-No. 10 San Diego State (7-6).
She had her best game of the weekend against then-No. 10 San Diego State. Waldthaler notched her ninth career hat trick in the match up to go along with an assist, three steals and five drawn ejections. One of those drawn ejections was a four-meter penalty, which she converted for the goal. She helped the Hoosiers overcome a pair of two-goal deficits against the Aztecs. The victory over the Aztecs was the fourth time this season the Hoosiers defeated a team ranked in the top 10.
At the season-opening Michigan Invitational, Waldthaler scored five goals on nine shots with an assist. She recorded the eighth hat trick of her career in leading the Hoosiers past rival and then-No. 9 Michigan, 7-6, on Saturday, Jan. 29. The 2004 All-CWPA selection scored the first two goals of the match, pushing IU to the early advantage. She also scored to give IU a 5-4 advantage in the fourth period.
Additionally, Waldthaler had four kickouts earned against the Wolverines. She registered a goal in games against No. 1 UCLA and Colorado State as well. In a 13-3 victory over the Rams, she had a goal, an assist and earned a four-meter penalty shot for the Hoosiers, drawing the ejection.
