BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana video coordinator Joel Baron was named the Big Ten's VC of the Year as announced by the Collegiate Sports Video Association on April 14. Baron was awarded the honor by a vote of his conference peers.
"I'm very appreciative of my peers for selecting me as video coordinator of the year," Baron said. "If this award was picked by people on the national level, as opposed to individuals in the conference, I don't think it would mean quite as much. Since I was picked by peers in the Big Ten, and people who see my video on a weekly basis, I think it's great because it's a representation of myself and Indiana University."
It's his responsibility, on a daily basis, to prepare the coaching staff for upcoming games, or supply them with video from practice.
Baron, in his third year at Indiana, and 10th overall as a video coordinator, shows no signs of slowing down.
"I love what I do," Baron said. "Coach Hoeppner and his staff are just fantastic to work for. I have worked for some great coaches over the years, and from every coach I have learned and gained something new."
A 1999 graduate of Millersville (Pa.) University with a degree in speech communications, Baron served as Millersville's football video coordinator for five years, both as an undergraduate and after graduation.
He moved on to the University of Memphis in February of 2001, where he was the video coordinator for all sports. While at Memphis, he handled all video needs for every team, working hand in hand with both football and the 2002 NIT champion basketball team. Baron served in that role until August of 2002, when he came to Bloomington.
"Working in the Big Ten, I can honestly say that we strive to have the best video possible," Baron said. "I'm not saying that other conferences don't have great video, but we strive in this conference to have the best video week in and week out."
