Hoosiers Second, Overton and Quirarte in Top 10

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - In an event featuring seven Big Ten teams and 12 overall, the Indiana men's golf team sits in second place after two rounds at the Boilermaker Invitational. The Hoosiers shot a 5-over-par 581 (288-293) and trail first-place Missouri (289-287) by five strokes heading into the final round of the tournament. The Invitational is being hosted by Purdue and is being played on the par-72 Kampen Course.
"This golf course is as tough as any we will play," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "We got off to a rough start then really held it together and played some good golf, but we didn't finish well. We gave away some strokes at the end. However, I'm pleased with our overall play."
Helping the Cream and Crimson climb up the leaderboard was senior All-American Jeff Overton, who is tied for third place at 142. The Evansville, Ind., native carded a 4-under-par 68 in the opening round, the lowest score of any player in the field, before firing a 74 in round two.
Overton, a recent selection to the Palmer Cup team, is in search of his second title of the season in addition to the seventh of his career. He claimed medalist honors at the Xavier Invitational during the fall (Oct. 11-12). Golfweek's eighth-ranked golfer trails Purdue's Pariya Junhasavasdikul by two shots (70-70) and Missouri's Tyler Dunn by one (71-70).
Right behind Overton is Santiago Quirarte. The redhot freshman continued his torrid play, carding a 36-hole, 1-under-par total of 143 (73-70). Quirarte sits in sixth place and is in great position to corral his third straight top-15 finish and his second career top 10 (fourth at the Pioneer Classic on March 15-16).
"We come to expect this performance from Jeff, and he played really well today along with Santiago. The two of them are playing great for us, and they certainly did so today. Santiago is doing some exceptional things on the golf course," said Mayer.
In his best performance this spring, senior Heath Peters is just outside the top 10, placing in a tie for 12th place with 18 holes to go. The Garrett, Ind., native claimed an even-par 72 in the opening round and followed that with a 74 in round two to give him a 2-over-par 146 total. Peters is attempting to capture his first top 10 of the spring and his second this season (second at the Xavier Invitational on Oct. 11-12).
Participating in the second event of his career, sophomore Aaron Harrell concluded the day with 150 after matching 75s in rounds one and two. Harrell is tied for 30th entering the final day of competition.
Scott Seibert rounded out the lineup at 155. The junior fired a 77 on the opening 18 and came back with a 78 on the second 18 holes.
Indiana will make a run at its second title this season (Xavier Invitational) and its sixth championship in the last two years when the Invitational concludes tomorrow morning, Sunday, April 17, with an 8 a.m. start. IU Individual
