Lady Buckeye: Day One (4/16/05)
4/16/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
"I thought we played strong in the opening round, but we stumbled a bit on the last 18 holes," Indiana head coach Clint Wallman said. "This course played very tough in the morning, and it got even harder in the afternoon. It was dry and firm which allows little room for error."
Once again, it was freshman Elaine Harris leading the way for the Hoosiers. Harris carded rounds of 78 and 80 to currently place in a tie for 37th with a 158 on the par 73 OSU Scarlet Course (6,201 yards). Harris, who has led IU in three of the four tournaments played during the 2005 spring campaign, has now recorded an 80 or less in five of her last seven rounds.
Junior Molly Redfearn also played well, carding a team-low 77 during Saturday's morning round. However, she struggled on the afternoon with an 83, and sits in a tie for 43rd with a 169. Senior Bethany Brunner is just two strokes behind Redfearn, recording a 162, with a pair of 81s on the day.
Other IU golfers include junior Katie Carlson, who enters Sunday's final 18 holes in a tie for 78th overall with a 169 (83-86). Freshmen Stephanie Mayotte (89-87/176) and Gennifer Marrs (94-94/188) currently sit in 89th and 93rd, respectively.
"We just have to play with a mentality that if we make a mistake, we have to shrug it off and keep playing hard," Wallman said. "Our girls will have to play with confidence on Sunday and hopefully we will make a move up on the leaderboard."
Michigan State leads the 15-team field with a score of 588 (293-295). Spartan Mandi McConnell is atop the individual leaderboard as well, recording a mark of 145 (71-74).
The Hoosiers will enter Sunday's final round in a tie with Eastern Michigan. Sunday's finale is scheduled for a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. EST.
