BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Behind the strong play of senior Bethany Brunner and freshman Elaine Harris, the Indiana women's golf team earned one of its top single-round scores of the 2004-05 year in the opening round of the 22nd annual Indiana Invitational. The Hoosiers shot an impressive 327 and are presently in eighth place entering Sunday's final 18 holes.
Due to a heavy morning rain, the tournament's opening round was canceled. After the rain cleared, the competitors were forced to compete in soggy conditions, along with battling wind gusts of up to 40 mph on the afternoon.
"I think the weather really leveled the field out," IU head coach Clint Wallman said. "The wind prevented some of the longer hitting teams to take an advantage. The course really played difficult and was extremely challenging, especially on the greens."
Brunner carded a 79 overall on her lone round of the day to place in a tie for ninth with Robine Fagerberg of Arkansas-Little Rock. Harris continues her good play with an 81 to place in a tie for 20th overall.
"Elaine continues to impress," Wallman continued. "She takes a lot of pride playing for IU and she was very motivated playing in front of her parents and some of the local fans. Bethany is motivated because she is a hometown athlete playing in her final Invitational. She really wants to play well and I was extremely proud of Bethany."
Junior Katie Carlson is just one stroke behind Harris, carding an 82 on the par 72, 6,142-yard Indiana Golf Course. Juniot Molly Redfearn is tied for 58th with an 85, while freshman Stephanie Mayotte closed the round with an 88 and is tied for 73rd. Another true freshman, Gennifer Marrs, competed as an individual and is in 109th with a 98.
Individually, Notre Dame's Noriko Nakazaki is leading the tournament, carding a one-under par 71 on the afternoon. She leads Toledo's Natalie Storck, who finished three strokes behind Nakzaki with a 74.
The Fighting Irish will also take the overall team lead into Sunday's last 18 holes, carding a 312 during Saturday's round. The Irish lead Grand Valley State (317) by five strokes. Toledo is third with 322, while Ohio (323) and Wisconsin (324) round out the top five.
The Hoosiers were on top of the leaderboard for a majority of the day. However, they lost the lead when the wind picked up later in the day and the greens quickened, making putting difficult.
"This has been our best standing in a tournament heading into the final round," Wallman said. "I told the girls we were atop the leaderboard for a majority of the round. It has become basically an 18-hole tournament to try and move up the leaderboard."
The tournament was originally scheduled for two rounds on Saturday, with the final round being played on Sunday. However, due to the heavy rains and poor playing conditions, the tournament did not begin until noon on Saturday, forcing the opening round to be cancelled. The final 18 holes will be played on Sunday. A shotgun start will begin the last round at 9 a.m. EST (8 a.m. CST).
