Big Tens Day One (4/21/05)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Battling high winds, rain and cloudy skies throughout the opening 36 holes of the 2005 Big Ten Championship, the Indiana women's golf team sits in 10th place with a 649. With the weather worsening as the day went on, the Hoosiers carded a 320 through the opening 18 holes, followed by a 329 in the afternoon round.
"I am extremely pleased with our play and the effort our girls gave," head coach Clint Wallman said. "We began the day by battling through some difficult playing conditions and by the start of the second round, the conditions were even tougher. As a team, we feel really good heading into (Saturday's) third round."
It was junior Molly Redfearn leading the way for IU, currently sitting in a tie for 16th overall with a 12-over par 156. Redfearn opened the day with a 79 in the first round and improved with a 77 in poorer weather conditions. Only eight golfers in the entire Championship shot under 77 in the final 18 holes of the day.
"I thought Molly played outstanding," Wallman said. "She played smart golf and improved as the day went on. I was pleased with her performance."
Senior Bethany Brunner also competed well with scores of 76 and 83, and sits in a tie for 31st heading into Saturday's third round. Junior Katie Carlson, a native of Livonia, Mich., is in 50th with a 166 (83-83). Just two strokes behind Carlson is freshman Elaine Harris, who is in a tie for 52nd with a 168 (82-86), on the par 72, 5,966-yard University of Michigan Golf Course.
Freshmen Stephanie Mayotte (91-87/178) and Gennifer Marrs (92-99/191) round out the Cream and Crimson in 64th and 66th, respectively.
Ohio State took a commanding lead as the Buckeyes are atop the field with a 593 36-hole total. The Scarlet and Gray opened with a 297 and tallied a 296 in the second round to lead by 19 strokes over second-place Michigan State (306-306/612). Championship hosts Michigan (310-303) and Purdue (301-312) are tied for third with each shooting a 613, while Northwestern rounds out the top five with a 622 (310-312).
With weather conditions anticipated to worsen, the third round is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., with tee times off No. 1 and No. 10. The Big Ten coaches will meet Friday night to decide if a change in format will be necessary to accommodate the weather.
