Big Tens Round Three (4/22/05)

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - As conditions continued to worsen at the 2005 Women's Golf Big Ten Championship, Indiana remains in 10th place heading into Sunday's final round. The Hoosiers performed well on a cold, blustery day where temperatures peaked around 25 degrees, coupled with 20 mph winds, gusting up to 35 mph.
The Hoosiers recorded a 334 during Saturday's third round, following rounds of 320 and 329 on Friday, and sit just four strokes behind eighth-place Wisconsin with a 983.
"I thought we played well in extremely tough conditions," Indiana head coach Clint Wallman said. "We all battled gusty winds, rain and snow, but our team competed through these tough conditions and I am really proud of them. We feel positive about what we have been able to do throughout the course of this Championship."
Despite the inclement weather, the Cream and Crimson had three golfers make a move up the leaderboard. Leading the way was junior Molly Redfearn who continues her impressive play. After recording rounds of 79 and 77 in Friday's opening day, Redfearn carded a score of 79 and was one of just 12 golfers in the entire tournament to break 80 in Saturday's wintry weather. After beginning the day in a tie for 16th, she will enter the final round in a tie for 12th overall with a 235.
"Before the tournament began, Molly made a commitment to a sound and mental strategy and it has paid off in huge dividends," Wallman said. "We talked about being able to put herself in the position to make birdies and she has done just that. She has played intelligent and solid golf."
Senior Bethany Brunner also played admirably, carding an 82 in the only round of the day. She currently is in a tie for 25th with a 241 (76-83-82), after finishing Friday in a tie for 31st. In addition, freshman Elaine Harris is in a tie for 47th with a 251 (82-86-83), moving up five spots from Friday's round.
Other IU golfers include junior Katie Carlson who is tied for 61st with a 260 (83-83-94), while freshmen Stephanie Mayotte (91-87-90/268) and Gennifer Marrs (92-99-103/294) round out IU in 65th and 66th, respectively.
Ohio State continues to run away with the Championship with a 900 (297-296-307). The Buckeyes increased their lead to 32 strokes over tournament-host Michigan (310-303-319/932). Michigan State is just one stroke behind the Wolverines with a 933 (306-306-321), while Purdue (301-312-325/938) and Northwestern (310-312-322/944) round out the top five.
The Buckeyes also boast of the top four individuals overall, led by Kristen White with a 222 (73-73-76). White will enter the Championship's last day three strokes ahead of teammate Lindsay Knowlton (75-73-77/225).
The fourth and final round is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 24, with tee times off No. 1 and No. 10. However, with snow accumulations of 2-4 inches expected in Ann Arbor over Saturday night, the Big Ten coaches will meet Sunday morning to decide if a change in format will be necessary to accommodate the weather.
