Hoosiers Fall In Big Ten Quarterfinals

IU claimed the doubles point, but NU battled back and won four of the six singles contests, including a trio of the four three-set affairs, en route to the win.
The Cream and Crimson snared the initial two doubles matches to garner the tandem point. Senior Ryan Recht and junior John Stone dismantled sophomore Christian Tempke and junior Adam Schaechterle, 8-3, at the No. 2 spot. The victory was the 14th of the year for Recht and Stone.
The Hoosiers secured the pairs competition as the freshmen duo of Michael McCarthy and Dara McLoughlin downed sophomore Willy Lock and senior Justin Hoeveler at the No. 3 slot by the score of 8-6. The IU twosome reached the 10-win mark with the conquest Friday.
The final match of senior Jakub Praibis and junior Dmytro Ishtuganov against seniors Tommy Hanus and Chuck Perrin, at No. 1, was abandoned at the conclusion of the No. 3 doubles affair.
The doubles matches and the beginning of the singles contests were held outside at Illini Grove, before inclement weather forced them indoors into the Atkins Tennis Center.
The Wildcats evened the tilt as Hanus, ranked 91st in the country, bested Praibis, 55th, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 1 position.
Sophomore David Bubenicek pushed IU ahead 2-1 with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Perrin at No. 3. He pushed his overall mark to 21-7.
Northwestern squared the affair after Tempke edged Recht, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, at No. 2.
Stone won his fifth match in a row, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3), over Schaechterle at the No. 6 position to put the Hoosiers ahead once again in the contest. The Greenwood, Ind., native moved to 17-5 overall on the year.
The Wildcats claimed the quarterfinal, as sophomore Matt Christian beat senior Tom Bagnato, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4), at No. 5, and Lock upended junior Neil Kenner, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 4.
