BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's golf team finished in a tie for 10th overall at the 22nd annual Indiana Invitational. The Hoosiers played impressively, closing with a 318 during Sunday's final round, to finish in a tie for 10th overall with a 645 (327-318). The event was reduced to only two rounds due to heavy rains on Saturday.
"I think there can be a lot of positives taken from this tournament," head coach Clint Wallman said. "We were near the top of the leaderboard for the majority of the Invitational. We also were able to compete with most of the Big Ten teams and showed our ability to play with those high-level teams."
True freshman Elaine Harris continued her excellent spring, carding a 158 (81-77) to close play in a tie for 16th. It marked the best finish in her career, topping her previous best, which was a 40th-place result in IU's last tournament, the UNLV Invitational. It is also the third time in four spring events the San Francisco, Calif., native has led her team.
"I just can't say enough about Elaine," Wallman said. "She continues to prove she can play collegiate golf at this level. She had a great tournament and played very well. I thought all of our players competed well throughout the tournament."
Senior Bethany Brunner also shot a 158 to finish even with Harris in 16th overall. It was the best result of the 2004-05 campaign for Brunner, topping her previous season best of 24th at the Shootout at the Legends (Oct. 4-5). The Martinsville, Ind., native shot a pair of 79's on the par 72, 6,142-yard Indiana University Golf Course.
Junior Katie Carlson also competed well, closing play with a 163 (82-81), which resulted in a tie for 38th overall. Freshmen Stephanie Mayotte (88-87/175) and Gennifer Marrs (98-91/189) closed out the Hoosiers, finishing in a tie for 94th and 107th, respectively.
Individually, it was Notre Dame's Noriko Nakazaki who claimed the medalist honor, closing play with a two-over par 146 (71-75). She finished one stroke in front of Natalie Storck of Toledo (74-73/147).
The Fighting Irish also claimed the team title by nine strokes over Grand Valley State. The Irish ended with a 620 (312-308), while the Lakers, which entered the Invitational ranked ninth among Division II schools, shot a 629 (317-312) to place second. Minnesota cut 34 strokes off its opening round score to record the low round of the day at 300, and finished third overall with a 634 (334-300). Ohio was fourth with a 635 (323-312), while Marshall (325-311/636) and Toledo (322-314/636) tied for fifth.
IU will next compete at the Lady Buckeye Invitational on April 16-17 in Columbus, Ohio.
