BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The ninth-ranked Indiana women's water polo team hosted its third and final match of the 2005 Fluid Five at the Counsilman-Billingsley Center on Sunday morning. After defeating both Colorado State and UC-Davis on Saturday, the Hoosiers looked to go undefeated in the Fluid Five as they took on the No. 10 San Jose State Spartans. While the two teams battled throughout the first two period, Indiana proved to be too much for SJSU as it wound up winning the match 14-9. With the win, the Hoosiers improved to 20-8.
"I felt we did a good job countering San Jose State's physicality and using to our advantage," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We didn't match them physically in the early going, and it cost us giving up two early goals. The ladies settled in and responded to it toward the end of the first period, and the in the following two periods. We were able to use how physical they were against them by drawing ejections and getting out on the counter. That is by far the best we have countered all season."
SJSU struck first in the opening frame as senior Laura Scott scored two consecutive goals, each from the two-meter point on the right-hand side. Indiana was able to come back though, scoring their first goal with 3:51 left in the first period. Senior Krista Peterson fired up a shot from four-meters out and hit the left side of the net.
The Spartans moved their lead back up to two with 1:47 left in the first period. Sophomore Rachel Rhodes tossed up a shot from the right side that sailed past the outstretched arm of the Hoosier senior goalkeeper Jessica Goldner. However Goldner responded shortly thereafter with an impressive save while SJSU was on a 6-on-5 advantage. Goldner then lobbed the ball down the pool to freshman Carolyn Conway, who passed to Peterson. Peterson was able to find the net for the second time in the first period as IU pulled to within one of SJSU.
The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the first period and into the second stanza. Down 5-4 with 4:45 left in the second frame, Peterson struck again for the Hoosiers, giving her the 32nd hat trick of her career. On the day, Peterson was successful on each of the three shots to go along with two assists and two steals.
Peterson's goal started Indiana on a 7-0 scoring run. Junior Janis Pardy caught fire with 2:58 left in the second period. Pardy caught a sharp pass from Peterson, and proceeded to throw up a shot from four meters out. SJSU goalkeeper junior Krissy Hansell managed to get a hand on the shot, however it skipped past Hansell into the goal. Pardy continued to dominate for the rest of the game, finishing with a career-high four goals on seven shots.
While the Spartans were able to get within four of the Hoosiers twice in the final period, IU never seemed to lose control of the game. Indiana's final goal came with 1:01 left in the fourth period. Sophomore Claire Nicholson dumped the ball inside to Conway who fired a backhanded shot into the back of the net. Conway's goal put the Hoosiers up 14-8, and capped off an impressive shooting performance as Indiana went 14-of-27 (.519) from the field.
Sophomore Kristin Zernicke continued her impressive play in the Fluid Five, finishing with two goals to go along with a team-high three assists and three steals. Junior Bridget McKeon and senior Kandace Waldthaler finished with two goals apiece in the victory. Defensively, Goldner had nine saves in net for the Cream and Crimson.
The win gives Indiana its seventh 20-win season in the program's eight-year history. Additionally, it marked the fifth time the Hoosiers have beaten a team ranked in the top 10 this year, a feat never accomplished by the IU water polo team.
The first two games of the morning saw victories by SJSU and Michigan as they defeated CSU and UCD respectively. The Spartans topped Colorado State, 10-3, while Michigan bettered the Aggies, 6-3. UC-Davis went on to cap the Challenge with a 9-2 win over Colorado State.
The Cream and Crimson will have three weeks off before returning to action on April 22, in the CWPA Western Division Championship. Indiana will be the top seed in the event for the first time in their eight-year history. IU finished the CWPA Western Division regular season with a perfect 7-0 record.
