Overton Leads, IU Tied for Third at Fossum

EAST LANSING, Mich. - In its final tune up before the Big Ten Championships, the Indiana men's golf club sits in a tie for third place after two rounds at the 15-team Fossum/TaylorMade Invitational. Playing the Forest Akers West Golf Course, the Hoosiers are tied for second out of the nine conference squads in the field with a 583 (290-293). The Cream and Crimson trail first-place Xavier (287-283), second-place Michigan State (289-291) and are even with Minnesota (292-291).
Following rounds of 68 and 67, senior Jeff Overton holds a four-shot lead at 9-under-par entering the final round of the event. His 67 was the lowest round of any golfer in the field and his best 18-hole score of the spring season. The All-American leads Jason Kokrak of Xavier, who corralled a 139 (70-69).
"The golf course was really in great shape today, and it was a good test of golf. And when you get a good test, Jeff Overton rises to the occasion," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "The tougher the course, the better he plays. There aren't any more superlatives left to describe Jeff."
Overton kicked off the opening round on the fourth hole and proceeded to birdie four of his first five holes before back-to-back bogies at nine and ten. After a string of six pars, the Evansville, Ind., native birdied the par-5 17th and the par-4 first to get to 4-under.
Carrying the momentum into round two, Overton again started on No. 4 and played his first nine holes in 3-under. The Palmer Cup team member netted birdies at the eighth (par 5), ninth (par 3) and 11th (par 4) holes. He continued his redhot play into the backside, claiming birdies on No.'s 13, 17 and 18 before his only bogey of the round and just his third of the day on the par-4 third hole.
Overton has put himself in position for his second title of the season in addition to the seventh of his career. He claimed medalist honors at the Xavier Invitational during the fall (Oct. 11-12).
Along with Overton, Heath Peters resides in the top five, firing an opening-round 3-under-par 69 and a second-round, 2-over-par 74. The senior is tied with Colin Biles (72-71) of Ohio State with a 1-under-par 143 total. Peters is in search of his 16th career top ten and his second this season (second place at the Xavier Invitational).
Beginning his first round with a bogey on five, Peters bounced back with a pair of birdies at the eighth and the ninth holes. A bogey at 10 and birdies at 13 and 15 put Peters at 3-under before a double bogey at the par-4 16th moved him back to even par. However, the Garrett, Ind., native stormed back with birdies on the final two holes of the back nine en route to finishing with 69.
On the second 18, Peters sat at 4-over-par through 15 holes but closed with birdies on two of his last three holes to move into a share of fifth place.
"I'm really pleased with Heath today, especially the way he played on the opening 18. He came back to birdie two of the last three holes in round two and really fought hard," said Mayer.
In the third spot, freshman Santiago Quirarte placed in a tie for 41st place heading into the final 18. Quirarte shot back-to-back 3-over-par 75s on day one.
Rounding out the line up, junior Scott Seibert carded a 78 and 77 for 155 and sits in a tie for 61st, while sophomore Aaron Harrell is tied for 71st after rounds of 79 and 78.
The Cream and Crimson looks to climb up the leaderboard as the tournament concludes tomorrow, Sunday morning, with a 9 a.m. (EDT) shotgun start.
"We need everybody on the same page tomorrow to make a run at this tournament. If we get everyone playing well, we will be in great shape," said Mayer.
