Hoosiers Release 2005 Schedule (04-07-05)

The 18 teams on the Hoosiers' 2005 schedule racked up a combined 208-121-40 record, a winning percentage of .618. The group of 12 teams that advanced to 2004 NCAA Tournament include Wake Forest, SMU, Boston University, Cal State-Northridge, Michigan State, Penn State, Michigan, Northwestern, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Maryland and Akron.
Indiana will once again begin the season with the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. The four-team invitational will include Notre Dame, Wake Forest and SMU. The Fighting Irish will be the Hoosiers playing partner for the third season. All three teams were seeded among the top eight in last season's NCAA Tournament with Southern Methodist as the seventh seed, Notre Dame garnered the fifth seed and Wake Forest was the top seed.
The 23rd annual adidas/IU Credit Union Classic will open with Notre Dame and SMU on Friday, Sept. 2, at 5 p.m. The Hoosiers will open against 2004 regular season Atlantic Coast Conference Champion Wake Forest at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 4, Notre Dame battles Wake Forest at noon, followed by the Hoosiers against SMU at 2 p.m.
The Hoosiers will then travel to Notre Dame to take part in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament on Sept. 9-11. Indiana will open the tournament against Saint Louis at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. It will be the third straight season the Hoosiers and Billikins have met. For the second time in as many seasons, the Hoosiers will battle the Terriers of Boston University to close out the tournament at 5 p.m. on Sept. 9.
Indiana will travel to Corvalis, Ore., for the Oregon State Classic on Sept. 16-17. IU will start with 2004 NCAA Tournament participant, Cal State-Northridge at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 16. It will be the first time the two squads have met. After playing Oregon State last season in the second game of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic, the Hoosiers will return the favor, playing the Beavers at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
Marquee non-conference match ups include trips to Maryland and Notre Dame. Indiana will travel to South Bend to battle the Irish on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. Indiana and Notre Dame have split the last four seasons, including a 2-0 win for IU in Bloomington last season. The Hoosiers will face the Terrapins in a rematch of the College Cup semifinal on Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. Junior John Michael Hayden's header with 48 seconds remaining in the second overtime period propelled the Hoosiers past the Terrapins, 3-2.
Other non-conference match ups include home games against IUPUI, Butler and Akron as well as a road trip to Louisville. The Cream and Crimson's Nov. 3 game against Akron, in Bloomington at 7 p.m., will serve as senior day for a trio of Hoosiers (Brian Plotkin, Mike Ambersley and Jordan Chirico).
The Big Ten Conference continues to get stronger with each passing season, evident by six of the seven conference teams earning NCAA Tournament berths a season ago. The Hoosiers will host Michigan State, Penn State and Ohio State in conference play this season while traveling to Michigan, Wisconsin and Northwestern. The Hoosiers and Buckeyes shared the regular season Big Ten title last season, while Michigan State won the conference tournament. The 2004 regular season title was the 11th overall and ninth straight for the Cream and Crimson.
The exhibition part of the schedule will include a pair of matches against UCLA and Illinois-Chicago. The Hoosiers will play UCLA, who was the sixth seed in the 2004 NCAA Tournament, in Ft. Wayne, Ind., at 8 p.m. on Aug. 19. Indiana will then host the Flames on Aug. 27 at 7:30 p.m. A pair of familiar faces will accompany UIC, as the Flames are coached by former IU player and assistant coach John Trask. He is assisted by former IU player and assistant Sean Phillips.
The 2005 Big Ten Tournament will be played in Evanston, Ill., Nov. 10-13. The 2005 NCAA Tournament will start with first round competition on Tuesday, Nov. 20. The 2005 NCAA College Cup will be played in Cary, N.C., Dec. 9-11.
