"I was proud of the way the boys played tonight," Indiana head coach Mike Freitag said. "We ask a lot of these guys. They were here early this morning for the Symposium, and then played a good team in Saint Louis tonight. We continue to play well defensively and that was our third shutout in three games. Offensively, we continue to find ways to score and win games."
The Hoosiers got on the board just 3:07 into the match off a header from junior forward Jacob Peterson. Senior midfielder Brian Plotkin crossed the ball in from the right side to Peterson, who headed the ball over the goalkeeper from six yards out. The goal was Peterson's second on the spring season after he scored against Bradley on April 3.
The Indiana defense held tough in the shutout. The Hoosiers did not allow a Billiken shot until the 32nd minute when Johnny DiRaimondo attempt went wide left.
IU added another goal just six minutes into the second half on a connection from a pair of redshirt freshmen. Midfielder John Mellencamp found former high school teammate Kevin Noschang in the middle of the box. Noschang cut back to the right and buried a shot from 10 yards out into the right side of the net. It was his fourth goal in just three spring matches.
"Kevin is still developing," Freitag said. "He has his deficiencies, but he continues to work hard to get better. He has done well with his chance this spring, and his speed is always a threat to the defense."
SLU's best scoring chance came in the 74th minute. After a foul 25 yards out gave the Billikens a free kick, sophomore goalkeeper Chris Munroe came up with a sprawling save. DiRaimondo's attempted free kick from the right side. Munroe finished with two saves on the evening in picking up his second clean sheet of the spring.
The Cream and Crimson nearly tacked on another goal in the 79th minute. Plotkin sent a free kick from 25 yards out curling to the near post, but it was stopped by SLU goalkeeper Pat Disbennett.
Freitag pointed out the play of a trio of Hoosiers on the night. Junior Josh Tudela continued his solid spring in the midfield, while a pair of starting backs, junior Jed Zayner and sophomore Charley Traylor, were vital in the shutout.
"Tudela played very well again tonight," Freitag said. "He is all over the field and hardly ever makes mistakes. He is probably one of the most honest players we have had here at Indiana. He plays so hard all the time."
"Charley Traylor is another player who continues to play well this spring," he added "We asked him to start in the back tonight and then he came up to play some in the back of the midfield. He is a valuable member of our team because he is so versatile."
"I thought Jed Zayner had a really good game," Freitag said. "I thought it was one of his best games because you didn't see him. He played simple and got the job done. Jed is always at his best when he plays simple."
The Hoosiers continue the spring next week with a pair of games in Indianapolis. IU will battle Butler at North Central High School on Wednesday, April 13. Game time against the Bulldogs is set for 7 p.m. Indiana will then battle Dayton on Friday, April 15, as part of the Urban Soccer League Fundraiser at Kuntz Stadium. The game is set for an 8 p.m. start time.
The Cream and Crimson will close out the spring by hosting the Mexican Youth National Team in a friendly exhibition, Tuesday, April 19th at 7:30 p.m. IU will partner with the Indiana Youth Soccer Association in benefiting the Latino soccer programs around the state of Indiana. General admission for the game is $5 with children under 6 receiving free admission. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or by calling the IU Athletic Ticket Office at 866-IUSPORTS.
