Zernicke Named POW

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore Kristin Zernicke became the third Hoosier to earn Collegiate Water Polo Association Western Division Player of the Week honors with her selection on Thursday, the conference office announced. It is the first award of Zernicke's Hoosier career, joining seniors Kandance Waldthaler and Jessica Goldner as recipients this season.
Zernicke led the Hoosiers to a perfect 3-0 mark at the Fluid Five Challenge in Bloomington, Ind. , April 2-3. The Calgary, Alberta, Canada, product registered a pair of goals in victories over Colorado State (11-4), then-No. 14 UC-Davis (4-3) and then-No. 10 San Jose State. For the weekend, Zernicke was 6-of-8 shooting (.750) to go along with four assists, six steals and on drawn ejection.
"I was really pleased with the way Kristin played at the Fluid Five," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "This was the weekend we have been waiting for her to have as far as getting involved in the offense for quite some time. She has been as solid of a player that we have had over the last year and a half in directing the offense and playing strong defense. It was nice to see her get rewarded for that."
Zernicke scored on her only two shots of the game in the opening half against the Rams of Colorado State. She also added an assist in the victory. The sophomore attacker scored IU's first two goals in a 4-3 victory over No. 14 UC-Davis. She also added a team-high three steals in the win.
Against then-No. 10 San Jose State, Zernicke turned in another stellar performance, helping the Hoosiers revenge a 7-6 loss earlier this season to the Spartans. She finished with two goals to go along with a team-high three assists and three steals. Zernicke also drew an ejection in transition in the win. The victory over SJSU was the fifth over a top 10 opponent this season, marking a new school record.
With the three victories, the Hoosiers improved to 20-8 on the season. It marked the seventh time in the program's eight-year history it had won 20 or more contests. On the year, Zernicke leads the Hoosiers with 38 steals. She also ranks second in assists with 23, sixth in goals with 17 and fourth in drawn ejections with 10.
Waldthaler earned the honor on two occasions this season, following the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 29-30, and the Gaucho Invitational, Feb. 25-27. Goldner was honored after her performance in the Stanford Invitational, Feb. 12-13.
The Hoosiers moved up in the Collegiate Top 20 from ninth to eighth following the Fluid Five Invitational. The Cream and Crimson have spent 10 of 11 weeks in the top 10, including being ranked sixth on Feb. 16 and 23.
IU will have two more weeks off before returning to action on April 22, in the CWPA Western Division Championship. Indiana will be the top seed in the event for the first time in their eight-year history. IU finished the CWPA Western Division regular season with a perfect 7-0 record.
