Overton Wins Seventh Career Title at Fossum

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Jeff Overton earned his seventh career individual title and his second this season at the Fossum/TaylorMade Invitational hosted by Michigan State on Sunday afternoon, finishing in a tie with Ben Greve of Minnesota. The senior concluded the tournament at 210 (68-67-75), while Greve (70-74-66) stormed back with a 6-under 66 to clinch a share of first place. Overton also claimed the championship at the 2004 Fossum, joining Randy Leen (1997) as the only Hoosiers to win the event.
As a team, the reigning Fossum/TaylorMade champions finished in sixth place at the 15-team event held at the Forest Akers West Golf Course. The Hoosiers carded a final-round 298 en route to an 881 finish (290-293-298). Minnesota erased a 13-shot deficit to win the tournament with 867 (292-291-284), while Xavier (287-283-300) and Illinois (292-293-285) finished tied for second place, three strokes behind the Golden Gophers.
"It was a really, really tough day out there and you have to applaud the players on Minnesota and Illinois for playing so well today. As for Jeff, he gets a share of the title after an outstanding tournament," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "He played extremely well, and it is a deserving championship."
Entering the day with a four-shot advantage, Overton played an up-and-down round but managed to hang on for medalist honors. The All-American won his first tournament since the Xavier Invitational earlier this fall (Oct. 11-12).
Behind Overton, senior Heath Peters collected his second-best finish this season, narrowly missing his 17th career top 10, sharing 11th place. The Garrett, Ind., native closed with a 76, giving him a 54-hole, 3-over-par total of 219 (69-74-76). Peters previous best finish this season was a second-place showing at the Xavier Invitational.
The final three Hoosiers in the line up each recorded their best rounds of the tournament on the final 18. Freshman Santiago Quirarte charged into a tie for 27th at 223 (75-75-73). Quirarte played his first eight holes at 3-over-par but bounced back with birdies at the par-5 13th and 17th holes. The Queretaro, Mexico, native went on to bogey No. 1 and offset that with a birdie at the par-5 second. He closed the round with a pair of pars to record his 1-over 73.
Scott Seibert was the next-lowest Hoosier on the day, shooting a 2-over-par 74. His round brought him into a tie for 49th place, charting a 54-hole 229 total (78-77-74).
"Santiago played well as he has done all spring. He really turned in a great season for a freshman. I'm also proud of how Scott bounced back today with a strong round of golf," said Mayer.
Sophomore Aaron Harrell rounded out the line up and closed with a 76, finishing in a tie for 67th at 233 (79-78-76).
Indiana returns to the course next weekend, Friday-Sunday, May 6-8, for the Big Ten Championships. The Big Tens will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin and will be held at the University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wis. Eighteen holes will be played each day with tee times beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday and at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
"Now we have to turn our attention to and prepare for the Big Ten Championships," said Mayer. "It is a wide open race for the title. We will work hard this week and get ready to bring the championship back to Bloomington."
