COLUMBUS, Ohio--In the opening day of the 2005 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships, junior distance runner Lindsay Hattendorf took a ninth-place finish overall in the 10,000m with a time of 36:44.47.
Her ninth-place showing however, was no testament of how well she ran throughout the duration of the race. The Chesterton,
Ind.
, native made a strong move around the 800m mark and maintained a solid third-place stance. It wasn't until the 3,000m mark that Hattendorf really started moving and took over sole possession of first place. She looked strong and confident in her role, but with 12 laps to go, Katrina Rundhaug of
Wisconsin
broke into a sprint to move past her competition. Hattendorf tried to hang on, but with slick conditions on the track and fatigue settling in, she fought hard to the end to capture her ninth-place finish.
Her teammate, Allison Miller ran in the same race and finished 16th with a time of 38:20.28.
Earlier in the day, junior Ashley Stinton cleared a personal-best 3.70m (12-01.50) in the pole vault, which put her 10th overall.
Competition resumes tomorrow with the first women's event (4x100m relay) set to begin at 2:10 p.m. (EST).
