This is the second academic laurel that Washington and Lumpkin have received during the 2004-05 school year. Both players were among IU's league-leading 74 student-athletes to receive Academic All-Big Ten honors during the fall of 2004.
The 2004 season marked the first time in school history that Indiana scored four defensive touchdowns in a season, and Lumpkin accounted for two of those scores. He had a 42-yard interception return for a touchdown against Minnesota on Oct. 30, and he had a 72-yard fumble return for a touchdown at Purdue on Nov. 20. He finished the year with 29 tackles and one pass breakup.
After missing the 2003 season with a knee injury, Washington returned to the field in 2004 and ran for 122 yards on 23 carries. His 5.3 yard per carry average was second-best on the team.
