Quirarte Shines at NCAA East Regional

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - After the opening round was suspended on Thursday and a 1 hour 9 minute rain delay Friday morning, the Indiana men's golf team finally completed its first round at the NCAA East Regional. The Hoosiers posted a 294 and sit in 20th place in the 27-team Regional at the par-71 Golf Club of Tennessee. Wake Forest is in first with 271 followed by Georgia (275) and North Carolina (276).
The top 10 teams at the Regional advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be conducted June 1-4 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. Coastal Carolina holds the 10th spot after opening with 274, 10 shots ahead of the Cream and Crimson.
Making his NCAA postseason debut, Santiago Quirarte was the lone Hoosier to break par. The freshman carded a 2-under-par 69 and is tied for 20th entering round two. Quirarte recorded six straight pars to start his round before netting birdies at the par-5 seventh and the par-4 ninth, with a bogey sandwiched between at the par-3 eighth.
The Queretaro, Mexico, native tallied birdies at the par-5 11th and par-3 14th holes, and although he bogeyed the par-4 13th, Quirarte finished the backside at 1-under-par en route to his 69.
Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina and Kyle Reifers of Wake Forest share the lead after the first round. Both golfers collected six-under-par 65s in the soggy conditions.
Big Ten Player of the Year Jeff Overton finished the opening 18 with a 1-over 72. The senior birdied his opening hole as he shot 1-under on the front, however, he bogeyed two holes coming in for 72. Overton is tied for 53rd place heading into the second round.
Rounding out the lineup, senior Heath Peters is tied for 97th with 76, while junior Scott Seibert and sophomore Aaron Harrell placed in a tie for 111th with matching 77s.
The second round is currently underway with the final round taking place on Saturday.
