Two Rounds Complete at NCAA East Regional

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Two rounds are complete at the NCAA East Regional, and the Indiana men's golf team is in 18th place. The Hoosiers posted a 292 on Friday afternoon and sit at 586 (294-292) through 36 holes in the 27-team Regional at the par-71 Golf Club of Tennessee. Wake Forest continues to lead the event with a two-day, 14-under-par 554 total (271-283) followed by Florida at 557 (287-270). Georgia (275-283) and Tennessee (282-276) are in third place, four shots off the pace.
The top 10 teams at the Regional advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be conducted June 1-4 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. Georgia Southern holds the 10th spot with 18 holes to play at 569 (281-288), 17 shots ahead of the Cream and Crimson.
"We have battled hard out there for two days," said Indiana head coach Mike Mayer. "The first day, we got off to a great start but made some bad mistakes on the back nine that really hurt us. And we went out and did the same thing today. We will try and get it together tomorrow and see if there is any magic left in the final round."
Leading the Hoosiers, Big Ten champion Jeff Overton is 2-over-par through 36 holes. The senior carded his second consecutive 72 and sits in a tie for 48th at 144. Starting on No. 10, Overton opened with birdies on the 11th and 12th holes before a bogey at 14 put him at 1-under, where he stayed until No. 3. At the par 4, the Evansville, Ind., native scored a double bogey to fall back to 1-over.
Overton finished the round with a birdie at the par-5 seventh but dropped to 1-over after bogeying his final hole.
Following Overton, Scott Seibert and Santiago Quirarte are both 6-over-par at 148 and share 77th place. Following a 77 in round one, Seibert raced off to a 3-under total, recording four birdies and one bogey on his first nine holes. The junior pushed it to 4-under with a birdie at the third; however, he double bogeyed each of the final two holes en route to an even-par 71.
Quirarte is the only Hoosier to break par in the two rounds, shooting a 2-under 69 in round one. But the freshman struggled on day two, posting a 79.
Junior Aaron Harrell bounced back from an opening-round 77 to collect a 3-over 74. Entering the final day of competition, the Bedford, Ind., native carries a 151 total, good for a 101st-place tie.
Closing out the lineup, senior Heath Peters also claims a 151 after firing a second-round 75 on the heels of a 76 during the opening 18.
The final round takes place tomorrow, Saturday, with Aaron Harrell the first Hoosier to tee off at 11:51 a.m.
