BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Future Indiana golfer Tiffany Hockensmith, who accepted a scholarship to play for the IU women's golf team and will enroll in the fall of 2005, has qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. The Bloomington, Ind., product carded a 77 on June 15 at the Hickory Stick Golf Club in Greenwood, Ind. - one of 27 golf courses around the country hosting qualifying tournaments.
"I am thrilled", Hockensmith said. "Going into the qualifier, I didn't expect anything. I was really just going for the experience of playing in a big tournament. I am just really excited to make the cut."
The Championship will be played July 11-16 at the Swope Memorial Golf Club in Kansas City. Mo. The U.S. WAPL Championship began in 1977 at Yahara Hills Golf Club in Madison, Wis. Current LPGA phenom Michelle Wie won the tournament in 2003, and was a runner-up last year to Ya-Ni Tseng of Chinese Taipei.
"Playing in a tournament of this caliber can really help me out when I go to Indiana in the fall," Hockensmith said. "Playing in this sort of tournament, which will have large crowds and some great players, will demand me to play at my best. I just have to put forth my best effort and we'll see what happens."
Hockensmith is a product of Bloomington South High School, where she earned the 2003 Mountain Dew Player of the Year. She also was honored as one of eight females from the state of Indiana selected to the Tri-State Challenge team - a feat she accomplished in 2003 and 2004.
The talented performer from Bloomington, Ind., competed well in many tournaments during her high school career, highlighted by capturing the 2003 Indiana Girls State Juniors championship. She finished atop the leaderboard at the Plantations Junior Golf Tournament in 2004.
Furthermore, Hockensmith was a sectional medalist in 2003. She finished second at the 2004 Indiana High School Athletic Association Conference and was fifth in qualifying at the 2004 Girls' State Junior Championship (73-77/150).
Hockensmith broke the 70-stroke mark at the 2004 City Tournament where she shot a second-round 68 in the match-play event. She captained her team and selected the team's most valuable golfer in 2003 and 2004.
