BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Although Indiana will not begin fall camp until Aug. 8, IU head coach Terry Hoeppner and sophomore cornerback Tracy Porter are both in the news this week.
Hoeppner was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame June 22 in Ft. Wayne. Hoeppner makes his IU debut tied for eighth in career winning percentage among the nation's active coaches. Hoeppner compiled a 48-25 (.657) winning percentage in six seasons at Miami (Ohio ) University. In 2003 and 2004, Hoeppner led the RedHawks to a pair of Mid-American Conference East Division titles and bowl game appearances for the first time in 30 years. Miami finished the 2003 season ranked 10th in the nation, and he coached nine eventual NFL draft picks in his 19 years as a Miami assistant and head coach. Prior to arriving at Miami in 1986, Hoeppner served as the defensive coordinator at Franklin College from 1980-85 and was also a head coach in Indiana.
Porter is a first team all-league selection by Street&Smith's preseason magazine. One of two freshmen to start for Indiana in 2004, Porter started the first seven games of the season before being sidelined with an injury. He recorded 22 tackles and a team-high three interceptions for 115 yards. He returned one of those interceptions 96 yards for a touchdown against Central Michigan, the third-longest interception return in school history. Porter is the first IU freshman since Greg Yeldell (five in 1998) to have at least three interceptions in a season.
