LEBANON, Ohio - Senior Brad Marek and former IU golf All-American Jeff Overton sit in the top 10 after the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship being held at the 6,966-yard, par-70 Shaker Run Golf Club.
Overton, the 2005 Big Ten Player of the Year, was one of six players to break par with a 1-under 69. He enters the second and final round of stroke play in a tie for third place, three shots behind Garrett Jones and Chan Song. The Evansville, Ind., native is looking for his second victory in the stroke-play portion of the Public Links after earning medalist honors in 2003.
Marek tallied an even-par 70 to grab a share of seventh place. Only three other golfers joined Marek at level par in the 156-player field.
Round two takes place on Tuesday with Overton teeing off at 7:40 a.m. EST and Marek beginning at 12:50 p.m. The low 64 scorers advance to the match-play portion of the championship, which commences on Wednesday. The 36-hole championship match is scheduled for Saturday.
