Five Hoosier Signees Named to PARADE All-America Team

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Five 2005 Indiana signees were recently named PARADE All-Americans. Lee Nguyen (Richardson, Texas/Plano East), Darren Yeagle (Louisville, Ky./Trinity), Brad Ring (Rockford, Ill./Guilford), Chris Schuler (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) and Chay Cain (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) were among the 35 boys high school soccer players nationally to be named to the magazine's All-America team. The five Hoosier signee selections led the way among colleges with Duke having three and Maryland, Wake Forest and UCLA each having a pair.
"We are very excited about this class coming in," Indiana head coach Mike Freitag said. "I think being acknowledged by PARADE as an All-American solidifies our thoughts about these five guys coming in. I don't know that we have ever had this many PARADE All-Americans. A lot of people are pretty envious of this class coming in."
The Hoosiers had a pair of forwards, Nguyen and Yeagle, named among the 12 strikers. Nguyen, the National Gatorade Boy's Soccer Player of the Year, was also a PARADE All-American selection in 2004 as a midfielder. He was recently named to the U.S. under 20 national team which will take part in the World Championships in Holland, June 10-July 2. Nguyen was also named an NSCAA Youth Boys All-American and a first team StudentSportsSoccer.com first team All-American.
"Lee Nguyen just made our under-20 National Team," Freitag said. "He will be playing in the World Championship later this month in Holland. He will be the youngest player on the team, and he was named the top forward by PARADE. We know he is a classy young man and a very talented player."
Yeagle, as well, spent some time with the under-20 national team ealier this year. He was the Kentucky state player of the year earning Mr. Soccer honors and the Gatorade State Player of the Year accolade. He was a second team StudentSportsSoccer.com All-American and an NSCAA High School Boys All-American in 2004.
"I am proud of Darren Yeagle from Louisville receiving this honor," Freitag said. "He has tremendous potential, brings a fighting spirit, quickness and speed that will challenge defenders."
A trio of players from the Chicago Magic soccer club were also named PARADE All-Americans. Ring, Schuler and Cain played together with the Magic and earned All-American honors from StudentSportsSoccer.com and the NSCAA. Ring, the Gatorade and NSCAA Illinois State Player of the Year and the StudentSportsSoccer.com fall National Player of the Year, was one of 12 midfielders named to the PARADE team.
"Brad Ring from Rockford, Ill., has a lot of the same characteristics of Danny O'Rourke," Freitag said. "He comes in as a polished player, who has great athleticism, fight and tenacity."
Schuler, rated the top defender in the class of 2005 by StudentSportsSoccer.com, was one of eight defenders and Cain, the top goalkeeper according to StudentSportsSoccer.com, was one of only three goalkeepers named to the PARADE squad. Cain and Schuler both played high school soccer for former Hoosier great and 1978 Hermann Trophy winner Angelo DiBernardo at Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora, Ill.
"Chris Schuler out of Chicago is a big strong defender," Freitag said. "It is nice to see him get this recognition as well. He has a lot of upside, and I look forward to working with him. He comes from an outstanding program with the Chicago Magic."
"Chay Cain is another player out of the Chicago Magic club," Freitag said. "He is a goalkeeper who has been in the under 18 national team pool. He knows how to play the position."
Coaches, scouts and recruiters around the country select candidates for the PARADE All-America teams every year. The final rosters were voted on by a team of experts.
The group of five PARADE All-Americans will join four other Hoosier signees, goalkeeper Joe Andrews (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet), midfielder Lee Hagedorn (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North), defender Kevin Sparks (Bloomington, Ind./South) and midfielder Brian Ackley (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) for fall practice starting in August. The two-time defending national champion Hoosiers will open preseason with a August 19 match in Fort Wayne, Ind., against UCLA.
