Noonan Named to Gold Cup Roster

CHICAGO - Former Hoosier All-American Pat Noonan was named to the 23-player roster for the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the regional championship of North America, Central America and the Caribbean, U.S. National Team manager Bruce Arena announced on Thursday. The 12-team Gold Cup runs from July 6-24 and will be played in six U.S. cities.
The National Team will begin to assemble June 26 in Portland, Ore., and will train at Nike World Headquarters. The national team opens up Group B play with Cuba, Canada and Costa Rica on July 7, 9 and 12, respectively. The games against Cuba (9:30 p.m. CT) and Canada (3:30 p.m. CT) will take place at Qwest Field in Seattle, Wash., while the Costa Rica (6 p.m. CT) match will be played at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. All three group matches will be televised on Telefutura and can be followed live on ussoccer.com's MatchTracker, presented by Philips Electronics. The quarterfinals of the Gold Cup are set for July 16 at Gillette Stadium followed by the semifinals and finals on July 21 and 24, respectively, both at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The top two teams in each of the four groups advance to the quarterfinals.
The U.S. has appeared in all seven Gold Cup competitions since 1991, reaching at least the semifinals in six of seven events, including a pair of championships. The U.S. enters the 2005 tournament with an unblemished 16-0-0 record in group play, having posted shutouts in 19 of 31 all-time Gold Cup games.
Noonan will be joined by some familiar faces as three New England Revolution teammates are on the roster as well. Midfielder Clint Dempsey, goalkeeper Matt Reis and midfielder Steve Ralston are on the roster as well giving New England the most representatives by one team from the MLS.
The 2001 and 2002 Big Ten Player of the Year has made six international appearances for the U.S. in 2005, making three starts. Noonan has played in four World Cup Qualifiers for the United States and made his first career qualifier start against Panama on June 9. In all, Noonan has seven career caps for the U.S. with one international goal. In the MLS, Noonan, the reigning Budweiser Scoring Champion, is tied for seventh in the league with 15 points and tied for second with seven goals. On Wednesday, Noonan helped the Revolution improve to 8-1-4 with two markers in a 3-1 victory over Columbus.
