BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior Lance Bennett and senior Isaac Sowells were named to CollegeFootballNews.com's preseason All-Big Ten teams. Bennett was a first team kick returner, while Sowells was a second team offensive line honoree. The selections were part of the CollegeFootballNews.com's 2005 Big Ten Preview.
Bennett headlined Indiana's exciting kick return game in 2004. He averaged 30 yards per kickoff return and 10.9 yards per punt return, including a punt 94-yard punt return touchdown in Memorial Stadium against Michigan State and a 98-yard kickoff return for the final score in a 30-24 upset over then-No. 24 Oregon. Bennett's numbers ranked third nationally and first in the Big Ten in kickoff return average. The Brooklyn, N.Y., product also was named CNNSI.com honorable mention All-American at the kick return position.
Sowells, considered by many as one of IU's top NFL prospects, started the first four games of 2004, before his season was cut short due to a wrist injury. He had started 16 straight games as the anchor of the offensive line at left tackle. The 6-3, 330-pounder has played in 28 games during his Hoosier career, making 16 starts.
Indiana will open the 2005 season on the road at Central Michigan. The Hoosiers will travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for the Friday, Sept. 2, affair. The game is slated for 7:30 p.m. and can be seen on ESPNU.
