Marek, Overton Dominate at Public Links

LEBANON, Ohio - Senior Brad Marek and former IU golf All-American Jeff Overton both claimed resounding victories in the opening round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship being held at the 6,966-yard, par-70 Shaker Run Golf Club. Marek disposed of Kyle Ramey (Paducah, Ky.), 6 and 5, while Overton rolled by Nathan Colson (Milwaukee, Wis.), 4 and 3.
Holding a 1-up advantage through three holes, Marek won the next five holes to build an insurmountable 6-up lead and cruised the rest of the way. The Arlington Heights, Ill., product pushed the margin to 7 up after 11 before closing out the match on the 13th hole.
Overton jumped ahead 3 up with victories on three of the first four holes and his advantage never fell below that mark. A par at No. 7 coupled with a Colson bogey gave the 2005 Big Ten Player of the Year the first of three 4-up advantages, and Overton concluded the match with a par on No. 15. On his round, the Evansville, Ind., native recorded three birdies and 12 pars for a 3-under total.
In 28 holes of action, neither Marek nor Overton trailed, and together held a lead for 27 of the 28 holes.
The duo returns to the links Thursday morning, playing for an opportunity to face each other in the round of 16 later Thursday afternoon. Marek will take on former Florida standout Duke Butler at 9:45 a.m. EST, and Overton will tee off in the 9:36 match against BYU junior Nick Becker. If both Marek and Overton win, they will go head-to-head at approximately 1:40 p.m. Thursday for a spot in Friday's quarterfinals.
