BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Senior safety Will Lumpkin started four of the 10 games that he played in during the 2004 and had a season-high six tackles, four solo and two assists, at Kentucky. The Dayton, Ohio, native scored his first touchdown of the season, a 42-yard interception return for touchdown, and posted two tackles and a pass breakup, in IU's win over then-No. 23 Minnesota. Lumpkin had three tackles, a pass breakup and one fumble recovery of 74 yards, for his second touchdown of the year, against Purdue.
Lumpkin and Washington were both named Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholars by the journal Black Issues in Higher Education. In order to qualify for the honor, a student-athlete must be a significant contributor in their sport and carry a 3.2 cumulative grade point average.
This is the second academic laurel that Washington and Lumpkin have received during the 2004-05 school year. Both players were among IU's league-leading 74 student-athletes to receive Academic All-Big Ten honors during the fall of 2004.
Lumpkin recently answered five questions from IUHOOSIERS.COM.

If I were head coach for a day, I would...
Have Coach Douglas "wired up" for a day of practice and meetings, and sell
the DVD. He does a great job and would captivate a national audience.
I chose Indiana because...
I wanted to play Big Ten Football, have a chance to play a lot, and be
close enough that my parents could come see me play.
Three words that best describe Coach Hoeppner...

What is the one message you have to potential IU football recruits...
IU is a great choice because it's going to offer you the opportunity to win at
the highest level of college football. When you get to campus, make sure that
you are not just a football player but you fully immerse yourself into the
college experience that IU has to offer.
