Sophomore Meredith Brown not only gets a lot of playing time in the midfield for the IU field hockey team, she is a published author as well. Brown, who has always had a knack for poetry, will have one of her own poems printed in Chicken Soup for the Girl's Soul.
As a twelve year-old, Brown wrote poetry "just for fun," she said. The more she wrote the more teachers started noticing her talent. Brown's work was first featured in the County Literary Magazine, which published work from students in Elkton, Md. The poem, entitled "All Around the World" was one of the pieces Brown authored and submitted to the County Literary Magazine.
Years after the poem was written, Brown was contacted in the spring of 2005 by an executive administrator at Chicken Soup for the Soul, who read Brown's work in an old issue of the County Literary Magazine and requested that the poem be submitted for the next installment of Chicken Soup for the Girl's Soul. By May Brown received word that her poem was selected to be published out of the thousands that were submitted.
"I think Chicken Soup books are great because the stories are from real experiences from so many age groups," said Brown. "From these real life stories come real feelings and emotions that everyone can relate to at some point in their life."
Chicken Soup for the Girl's Soul, featuring Brown's poetry, is due in bookstores in September of 2005.
