Future Hoosiers Excelling in Summer Events

Bloomington, Ind. - Shannon Johnson, Tiffany Hockensmith and Amber Lindgren are three members of the Indiana women's golf 2005-06 recruiting class and each is proving that they are prepared to make quite an impact for the Hoosiers next season.
Johnson, a rising senior who began the week competing in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in Kansas City, where she reached the round of 16, highlighted the trio as she rushed back to Sioux Falls in time to claim a third consecutive South Dakota Golf Association Women's Stroke Play championship at Minnehaha Country Club.
In doing so, Johnson became just the seventh woman in state history to win at least three straight stroke play titles, and the first since Kris Tschetter of Sioux Falls accomplished the feat from 1983-86.
"That's definitely very cool," said Johnson, who finished with a three-round score of 227. "This is always a tournament that I like to win."
Hockensmith and Lindgren also are proving they are capable of collegiate golf as both are among the top six golfers after 36 holes at the 82nd Indiana Women's Golf Association (IWGA) State Amateur Championship.
Hockensmith, a native of Bloomington, who also will compete for the city match-play championship over the weekend, carded rounds of 73 and 74 to sit at a three-over par 147. She will enter Wednesday's final 18 holes tied for second overall; just one stroke behind tournament leader Kristine Cook of Fishers.
Lindgren also is fairing well in the three-day event, collecting a nine-over par 153 (76-77). She enters the final round in a tie for sixth overall in the 66-person field.
Another Hoosier, rising freshman Gennifer Marrs, is tied for 44th overall in the same event, with a 173.
"I think this shows the future is very bright for Hoosier golf," Indiana head coach Clint Wallman said. "Each of these girls are having outstanding summers, and I am looking forward for each of them bringing their games to campus next fall."
